People's choice: Brisbane's favourite ice creameries

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

With Brisbane Ice Cream Festival just a fortnight away, what better time to get the scoop on some of our G&G readers favourite icy treats.

Anita Gelato | West Village, West End

First mixed in Mama Anita’s small kitchen in the Mediterranean 20 years ago, this family affair has scooped their way into the hearts of Australia (and New York!) with their comforting, home made flavours. Treat your tastebuds between frozen yoghurts, vegan, sugar free or good old classic ice cream in the knowledge that all 150 flavours have got Mama Anita’s personal stamp of approval and still ship from her very own kitchen!

Flavour pick: cappuccino with butter cookies

Gelato Messina | South Brisbane

If you’re catching a show at QPAC, exploring the museum, or just generally wandering south of the river, Gelato Messina is your one stop shop for a cold and creamy dessert. With an expansive range of classic flavours mixed with ever rotating specials which can include anything (and we mean anything) being smashed into gelati, you’re bound to find your perfect scoop.

Flavour pick: super dulce de leche or their crowd favourite, salted caramel and white chocolate. Ah-mazing!

La Macelleria | King Street, Bowen Hills

Born in Bologna, the Italian capital of Gelato (so basically Gelato capital of the world), La Macelleria’s goal is to “bring the pleasure of a typical Gelato to Aussie people in a way they’d never experienced before.” We’re certainly not mad about that! Their traditional menu boasts a true taste of Italy with flavours like castiglione

(fresh ricotta with caramelised figs) to choccolato (I’ll let you guess that one).

Flavour pick: caramello saluto or crema bologna

Lick | Morningside

You might already know the award winning Lick ice creamery for being the place that makes the strawberry ice cream for those Ekka sundaes, but it’s well worth a trip to Morningside to lick through their other 23 signature flavours including green apple and ginger, and nutella (as well as their fortnightly specials). You can also find Lick ice creams in these shops so take some home and treat yourself!

Flavour pick: salted nut Brown Butter with roasted almond or their Liquorice special.

Miss Sophia’s Gelateria | Stafford

Scooping seven days a week, northsiders can cool down in style every day at Miss Sophia’s Gelateria. All gelato is churned on-site daily using an authentically Queensland blend of Maleny milk and cream, Bundaberg sugar and Australian fruit. With weekly changing flavours, gelato is like a box of chocolates at Miss Sophia’s, you never know what you’re going to get… but you know it’ll be delicious!

Flavour pick: choc hazelnut and then visit their Cadbury topping bar for extra chocolatey goodness!

Massimo’s Gelateria | Noosa Heads

For our sunny coast readers, or anyone beaching it up in Noosa, look no further for your seaside scoop than Massimo’s Gelateria. With refreshing sorbets like watermelon and nectarine, to indulgent chocolate truffle and tiramisu, your beach day is set!

Flavour pick: flamin’ cold rocher or chocolate truffle

Gelateria Cremona | Rosalie

Since working as a Gelatio in Italy and Germany, Gerardo and Lei Deflorian have been treating the people of Rosalie to a taste of Italy since 2005. With over 200 flavours in the repertoire, Gelateria Cremorna specialises in unique flavours which have included sweet potato (!), so pop in and cool down with Rosalie’s best.

Flavour pick: you HAVE to try their salted caramel (made with their own salted caramel sauce which is made on site).

Ungermann Brothers | Various Locations

Burgers, shakes and gelato! What more could you want?

After successfully feeding Gold Coast beach goers, Ungermann Brothers is the new gelato joint set to shake up Ipswich; creating gourmet flavours with local ingredients. Enjoy your gela in sundaes, banana splits and all sort of sweet treats.

Flavour pick: espresso – the combination of coffee, cardamon and liqueur is out of this world!

Roll It Ice Cream Co | Various Locations

Ice cream like you’ve never had it before (think cold rock meets Teppanyaki)! First step is to choose your ice cream flavour, then your add ins (e.g. oreo, nutella), and then toppings. Roll It Ice Cream smooths the ice cream mixture across a Tepinyaki ice cream pan and rolls it up to make a custom delicious rolled ice cream! We can roll with this.

Flavour pick: Add in biscoff cookie butter and top with pretzels. You won’t be sorry.

Milano Gelateria  | Caloundra

Pair those Caloundra fish and chips with refreshing Italian scoops from multi award winning Milano Gelateria. Milano have created mouthwatering tastes that are truly authentic to their flavours and made with only the freshest produce. With a repertoire expanding over 100 flavours and 24 of these flavours on display at any time, be transported to the tropics with their fruity sorbets or indulge in European grandeur with their decadent chocolates.

Flavour pick: you will not find a mango sorbet that tastes more like mangoes than at Milano!

Baskin Robbins | Various Locations

It’s a classic and it’s delicious. Nothing says childhood like rolling up to a Baskin Robbins after school and trying to score a big scoop waffle cone. Enjoy nostalgic flavours from choc chip cookie dough to infamous, love potion #1. For all movie or marshmallow buffs, Baskin Robbins currently have a toasted marshmallow topping in honour of ghostbusters! Maybe pair that with movie theatre popcorn for a truly cinematic desert.

Flavour pick: Peanut butter and chocolate, or vegan espresso caramel chip for our vegan friends.

Noosa Gelato Company | Noosa (home delivered)

Want delicious gelato delivered to your door? Of course you do! Noosa Gelato Company are spreading joy by delivering their tubs of refreshing and indulgent flavours to homes. Jump on to their website to peruse their flavours ranging from nostalgic fairy bread (with crunchy hundreds and thousands) to summers day passionfruit pavlova, to refreshing raspberry and coconut sorbet.
