Best of Brisbane's Loaded Shakes

Forget the boys, Brisbane’s shakes are bringing everyone and their grandma to the yard.

If you believe you’ve experienced every mind-blowing shake in town, think again. Brace yourself for a flood of creamy, chocolatey goodness that’ll leave you yearning to lick your screen. From classic to exotic flavours and plenty of dairy-free options, Brisbane’s milkshake scene is flourishing, and we couldn’t be happier.

GELATO MESSINA | SOUTH BRISBANE & FORTITUDE VALLEY

There’s no going wrong with a trip to Gelato Messina. While their creamy, house-made gelato is nothing to sniff at (unless you want to, it smells delish), you’ve gotta try one of their shakes. Take your pic from one of their many rotating flavours, and an OTT milkshake you shall receive. Enjoy.

MILK CAFÉ | ASHGROVE

Milk Cafe & Bar in Ashgrove is a go-to spot to indulge in a loaded shake. These shakes are made with high-quality ingredients and come in a variety of flavours like cookies and cream and, our personal favourite, the Nutella shake – rich and creamy with just the right amount of hazelnut flavour. Topped with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and other decadent treats, Milk Cafe & Bar’s loaded shakes are a must-try for any milkshake enthusiast.

COWCH | SOUTH BANK, CHERMSIDE & GARDEN CITY

Cowch is a staple for Brissie desserts, and their milkshakes are no exception. For those looking for something a bit more mature but no less sweet, opt for one of their loaded cocktails. We recommend the Nuts About Chocolate in a share bowl, serving “2-4 people” (unrealistic, but okay).

GRASSFED | FISH LANE, SOUTH BRISBANE

If you’re after a dairy-free (arguably, better) version of the classic thick shake, add Grassfed to your hit list. Made with soy milk, coconut soft serve, sweetened with agave and topped with plant-based whipped cream, these guys have nailed the recipe for decadence. Slurp up a chocolate, strawberry, caramel or vanilla – and don’t skip on a side of loaded fries.

MISS KAY’S | MITCHELTON, BIRKDALE & SPRINGWOOD

Miss Kay’s may be the burger queens, but their milkshakes are just as amazing. We’re talking chocolate milkshakes topped with brownies, salted caramel milkshakes topped with popcorn, and peanut butter milkshakes topped with Reece’s peanut butter cups. There’s no such thing as too much.

SUE’S BURGERS & SHAKES | CARINDALE

We had high expectations for a restaurant that has shakes in its name, and Sue did not disappoint. Indulge in the sweet crunch of Maltesers, the rich salted caramel, or the refreshing minty goodness of Aero, all blended to perfection and topped with whipped cream. You may need two or three laps around Westfield to walk off one of these puppies.

SUPER COMBO | KING STREET, BOWEN HILLS

King Street is known for its range of gourmet eateries, but sometimes all you need is a solid shake and burger combo. Cue Super Combo: droolworthy burgers, and even more droolworthy shakes. Our comfort food comes with a salted caramel and pretzel super shake (or two).

ANDONIS CAFE & BAR | FORTITUDE VALLEY, YEERONGPILLY, YERONGA & MOUNT GRAVATT

At the tippy top of the OTT shakes hierarchy lies the beast that is Andonis – Insta-worthy with bursting flavour to back up the dazzling looks. Whether you’re about the Snickers in paradise or Oreo-loaded ‘gasm, you’ll be sipping up a storm once you get your hands around one of these bad boys. And with new locations popping up all over, you’ll want to make your way down ASAP.

SUBURBAN WEST END | WEST END

Our next stop is sure to get your nostalgia senses tingling – we’ve got a fairy bread milkshake, people! Suburban West End’s take on a childhood classic combines vanilla bean ice cream, your choice of milk, whipped cream, fairy floss and topped with 100s and 1000s. And there are vegan options available, so bring along all your dairy-free friends for a shake.

RIBS & BURGERS | BULIMBA, FORTITUDE VALLEY & WOOLLOONGABBA

They say they don’t give a fluff about having photo-genic dishes, but Ribs & Burgers still know how to serve up a glorious meal. If you want a nostalgia-filled shake, grab yourself a Milo thickshake made with a generous portion of ice and enough Milo to make even the most devoted fans proud. Top it all off with a solid shake of more Milo for a little extra flavour and crunch (just like we all do at home).

GOLLY GOSH! | YERONGA

It’s time to get freaky with a freak shake that’ll make you scream golly gosh! You may need to make a few visits, there’s a hefty list of must-try bevvies worthy of a Greek god. With 8 flavours available, like the Biscoff and white choc or Cherry Ripe, it’s near impossible to choose just one.
