Word on the street: foodie news

Helloooooo summer!

There’s some hot news coming out of balmy old Brissy this week. We’re here to cool you down and fill you in…

Bringing the heat this silly season is Eagle Street Pier, transforming their iconic riverside dining precinct into a tropical paradise for Tropical Days & Summer Nights. Expect good times, summer flavours and tropical vibes from December through to February! City Sounds will see Eagle Street Pier come alive with music every Friday and Saturday evenings, while foodies get into the action with a variety of dining offerings. Pony will be offering four-course lunches for $40 every day of the week, while Mr & Mrs G Riverbar shake $15 margaritas daily. Rico Bar and Dining is offering a happy hour every day from 4 to 6pm with $7 sangria, $6 tap beer and house wine, and $12 cocktails, or you can choose to spend your Friday afternoon enjoying the river views from the terrace at Saké with mini cocktails paired with a bar snack for just $15. See here for everything you need to know about Tropical Days & Summer Nights.

It’s no secret that Wilston Village’s Freja’s is one of our favourite breaky spots in Brisbane. Sad to see it go but excited for what’s to come, Freja’s is undergoing a huge makeover in the new year, set to relaunch as Elska – a 12-seat degustation restaurant. Dipping into his fine dining background, chef Nathan Dunnell is excited to shake things up and take food-lovers on a journey, educating diners on flavours and techniques across a succession of dishes that blend Australian ingredients with Nordic-inspired techniques. Freja’s will operate until Tuesday, December 31, after which it will close for a month of renovations and be reborn as Elska.

When one door closes another opens, and the breakfast-shaped hole in your heart is ready to be filled by new café on the block, Goodfolk. Sitting pretty in the heart of Bardon, Goodfolk café aims to be a space where locals can enjoy a reliable, polished and well-priced breaky, brunch or lunch every day of the week. Goodfolk Cafe’s menu boasts some delicious offerings with the likes of buckwheat, coconut and almond granola with coconut yoghurt and passionfruit, gooey bechamel, cheese, and ham toasties, and a chickpea, lime and coconut curry served with seasoned flatbread, roast cashews and poached egg. Passionate about sustainability and wholesome produce, Goodfolk grows cherry tomatoes and herbs in the outside garden, while also making almond milk, chai syrup and hot chocolate in-house.

In further foodie news that can only be described as heartbreaking, we regret to inform you of the closure of Urbane and its sibling venues The Euro and The Laneway Bar. Owner Andrew Buchanan announced the closure of all three venues, after Christmas lunch service on Wednesday, December 25. Hailed as one of Brisbane’s best fine-dining spots, Urbane has served the good people of Brisbane for nearly 20 years, and has won practically every award in the book. For one final hurrah, head to Urbane’s website to make a reservation.
