Cake & Bake sweetens up West End

Got a sweet tooth? Then you want to get yourself to West End’s new Cake & Bake as soon as you can, but be warned – you may never want to leave again. One look at the shelves of irresistible cakes, pastries and slices at the counter and you’ll be a goner, whether your weakness (we all have one) is a tangy lemon tart or rich chocolate cake. The mastermind behind this new haven of desserts is Jocelyn Hancock, who certainly knows a thing or two about both cakes and baking. With a reputation built on her successful former bakery in Fortitude Valley and several years consulting at Alfred & Constance and Chester Street Kitchen (NOW we know where they get their wild ideas from), Jocelyn is a bit of local celeb, and we’re more than a little excited for her new project. cake and bake 3Combining her love of all things sweet and her passion for fresh, locally sourced ingredients, Cake & Bake offers everything from baked goods and take away salads to salami, jam and pickled vegetables, plus smooth coffees to pair with a pastry. Stay a while and tuck into lunches like caramelised onion, roast pumpkin, mushroom, eggplant and parmesan pizettes or Kingaroy chickpea, eggplant and lemon salad, or just grab a focaccia, tart or quiche for lunch on the go. And some vanilla slice, a few biscuits and maybe a piece of the signature West End brownie, just for good measure. cake and bake 2As the name suggests, however, the cakes are the star of the show. You could try to resist, but we all know you’ll be walking out with a slice of carrot and walnut cake with orange cream and seeded toffee pieces, or maybe the chocolate and roasted hazelnut cake with dark ganache and dried rose petals. In the pantry along the back wall, you’ll find more varieties of Hancock & Farm jams, compotes and relishes than you could dream of, along with take home packs of biscuits, meringues and nougat. Though whether they make it home is another matter. cake and bake 4You’ll find Cake & Bake’s white brick walls and bold, red sign at 296 Montague Road, West End. Doors are open from 7:30am- 5pm from Tuesday to Friday and from 6am-3pm on Saturdays, but with treats this good we suggest getting in early before it all sells out!
