Brisbane’s best Southern soul food

Hey y’all, strap on your boots, whack on your cowboy hat and loosen that belt a few notches, because you’re about to be fixin’ to get a Southern feast into you. We headed south, deep south, to explore the ins and outs of American food in Brisbane with a little soul and came up with a list of digs where comfort food reigns and diet is a dirty word. Ditch the forks, you won’t be needing them. Bourbon Street | South Bank If the real Bourbon Street in New Orleans is too far away for dinner (fair call), then all you need to do is buckle up and take a short drive to Grey Street, South Brisbane for the best parmesan shrimp parcels in these parts. And if you think pulled pork is done and dusted and you’ve moved onto the next foodie fad, then hold up a gosh-darn second. We have just one thing to say: pulled pork with maple bacon and cider puree and a side of cornbread for mopping up all that delicious juice. Lord have mercy. Southern Attitude | Bulimba If it’s Southern hillbilly eats you’re after, you’ll find all those things you’ve heard rednecks say in the movies that you’ve always secretly wanted to try on the menu at Southern Attitude. Think (in a Southern accent) corn dogs, chicken fried chicken, cornbread with molasses butter and sides of buttered beans and blackened corn as well as crack wings – buffalo wings so good you’ll be addicted before you can say ‘darn tootin’ delicious.’ american-food-brisbane-smokeThe Smoke BBQ | New Farm There’s no need to deal with a plane-full of screaming kids and battle with your neighbouring, arm-rest hogging passenger to get a taste of authentic American favourites. The Smoke BBQ have dished up a whole menu of wings, burgers, shrimp and fries for you to dive into. Our favourite? The Smoked Ceegar – a tasty bite full of Southern heat, chicken, corn, spinach, cheese and red beans all rolled up in wrappers and fried, ready for dipping. Dig in. Carolina Kitchen | Coorparoo Oh, sweet Carolina. It’s all about comfort food you can wrap your hands around at Carolina Kitchen, so if you’re on a foodie hunt to find wings upon wings and more fries than you can handle, this is your go-to. Put down that knife and fork and pick up a bucket of hot sauce-coated wings and finish things off with a fat slice of pecan pie. Ready your napkins because heavens to Betsy, it’s about to get messy. american food brisbane hudsonHudson Corner | Albion O-hi-o there Hudson Corner, care to dish us up some famous Hudson ribs and a slice of key-lime pie? Hudson Corner is the place to be when it comes to a simple atmosphere with American BBQ food in Brisbane. You gotta love a local where you can get a BBQ plate of pork ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork AND buffalo wings and pick at chilli cheese fries til’ our heart (and belly) is content. Shady Palms | Stones Corner There’s nothing we like to do better than kick back and relax in the shade of Shady Palms. There are too many sensational Southern favourites to choose just one, so we think you should make a few trips and just try them all. Let’s face it, we always have time when food like Southern fried chicken and shrimp po’boys are on the menu. USA BBQ and Bourbon Bar | Eat Street, Hamilton Already the stuff of Southern legend, the USA BBQ and Bourbon Bar has gotten even better with the addition of a new smoky coal BBQ to their kitchen. They’re cooking with fire now, smokin’ up southern ribs with apple slaw, spicy chilli dogs and gooey chilli chocolate brownies with candied bacon pieces that will have you dreaming of momma’s house. Bacon bourbon (yep, you read that right) is just the icing on the biscuit. Miss out on these feeds of American food in Brisbane and you’ll be madder than a wet hen!
