Got a minute? Because we’d like to talk to you about cheesus, and we’ve got a list that’s going to make you a brie-liever.
The best thing about being an adult isn’t being able to drink, stay up late or even eat dessert for breakfast (though that is a pretty awesome bonus), it’s having no one to tell you that you can’t have cheese for dinner. Or lunch. Or breakfast. Don’t judge us. Seriously, put a big board of cheese and charcuterie in front of us and we’ll crumble at the knees. Starter? More like the ‘gratest’ main ever!
To help you adult just a little bit better, we’ve put together a list of the cheesiest spots in Brisbane. Because we know the best things in life are brie.
Peel Street | South Brisbane
Peel Street Grill and Cellar does have a tempting share plate menu, but it’s their cheese boards stacked with sharp aged cheddar and creamy blue that have us pre-planning our wine matches every Friday afternoon. Add a charcuterie board with salumi, prosciutto and smoked meats to the table and ask the bar for a wine recommendation and you’ll be feeling ‘grape’ in no time.
Corbett & Claude | CBD & Indooroopilly
Something is in gruyere at Corbett & Claude – a holey feeling that only comes from the words: DIY cheese and charcuterie board! Put together your own dairy-licious pile with vintage cheddar, double cream brie, blue, Persian feta, prosciutto and salami from local providores to choose from. With plenty of crackers, of course.
Cru Bar | Fortitude Valley
Whether your day’s been gouda or bad, Cru Bar will have you feeling a whole lot better after a plate of their gourmet cheeses with lavosh, pide and the must have quince paste. We can never go past the crumbly Healey’s Pyengana with a hint of sweetness, but you might prefer a soft and silky Le Dauphin. Best paired with one of their many, many wines.
Gerard’s Bar | Fortitude Valley
If Gerard’s extensive list of salume, displayed in an impressive ceiling cabinet, doesn’t get you excited, things just get feta and feta with their menu of pates, terrines and cheeses to pair it with. Create your own board with treacle-cured pork jowl, spicy nduja and creamy blue cheese. Did we mention they do a mean cocktail, too?
Aquitaine | South Bank
You’ll feel pretty cured of all your woes in no time at Aquitaine, where the charcuterie platter is matched with sparkling city views. Generously piled with house cured meats, black pudding, spicy salami, smoked pork belly and lamb rib, it’s just the thing to get you in the mood for a night of French cuisine.
Green Beacon | Teneriffe
Beer and cheese. Who knew? An unlikely king of cheese and charcuterie, Green Beacon matches their brews with multiple options, including a session plate of Jersey cream brie prosciutto, tapenade, peppered fig paste and sourdough. Our tip? Grab the salami board and pair it with a wedge each of cheddar, brie and blue. Sessional food indeed.
Emporium Bar | Fortitude Valley
Apart from being a totally under-the-radar bar where you can hide away in a cosy corner with a cocktail before you head to dinner, Emporium Bar does a pretty good charcuterie plate stocked with cured meats, cornichons and grissini. We’ve also got a bit of a fet-a-ish for their cheese platter – creamy cheese wedges, honey, apple and lavosh bread are the makings of a good night.
Cowch | South Bank
You didn’t know Cowch did cheese plates? You’ve got to brie kidding me. Next time you visit, tear your eyes from the Naked Pops (or just save them for after), and wrap you lips around hard cheddar, brie, blue vein cheese, cornichons, Dijon mustard, pickled figs and crackers.
You cheddar be careful though, or you might end up addicted to the cheese. Don’t laugh, it’s a scientifically proven problem.
