Word on the street: foodie news

SOS! Some relief from this heat would be great, thanks.

While you sit and sweat, we’ll tell you all the exciting happenings in Brisbane’s food scene!

January can’t come soon enough, because Valley hotspot X Cargo has just announced their exciting collaboration with Ciroc Vodka, turning their outdoor eats alley into a pop-up bar and pool space. X Cargo is dropping a huge shipping container swimming pool into the bar area, with cabanas and daybeds available to hire. The private pool club bar will be ready to shake and stir you up some ice cold Ciroc Vodka cocktails, while you nibble on summer eats and enjoy the live DJ spinning tracks. Opening Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from January 1, X Cargo’s pool club sounds like the perfect summer!

The Valley has seen its fair share of exciting new venues arrive in 2019, and it’s adding one more for good measure! Cocktail and tapas bar Six Ninety Bar and Eatery will open its doors next week, taking over the two-storey Apothecaries Hall building on Bakery Lane. Boasting a ground-level bar and kitchen and an upstairs bar and function space, Six Ninety will have a strong cocktail list of 22 concoctions, and a global food menu encompassing a collection of share plates and tapas.

We knew this was coming, but it still hurts to talk about. West Village’s colourful pop-up Fredericks has served up some deliciously playful cocktails since September, and it’s finally time to say goodbye. Fredericks will officially close on Friday December 20, but not before one more weekend of festive celebrations. Their cocktail menu is filled with holiday-themed concoctions like the Summer Snow – berry-infused gin, strawberry, lime and salt – and the O Tannenbaum – apple cider, vodka and lemon.

It’s been a big year for Betty’s Burgers, with the devilishly delicious burger joint opening new locations at Indooroopilly and Howard Smith Wharves… and they’re set to add one more before the year is done! The 170-seater on Albert Street will be Betty’s biggest one yet and will arrive just before Christmas. This exciting foodie news coincides with the addition of two tasty burgers exclusive to Betty’s Queensland locations, with the Noosa Classic Surf (Angus beef, lightly battered prawns, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and special sauce) and the Betty’s Classic Vegan (crispy fried brown-rice and vegetable patty, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and spicy mayo).

Well now we’re sweating too, thinking about all the cocktails and burgers that will be consumed this summer…
