Where to celebrate Lunar New Year 2022

Where to dine for Lunar New Year 2019
We predict good fortune (and even better food) for 2022.

The Lunar New Year gives you a second chance to start over because (let’s face it) January is always a write-off! Our favourite part of this celebration? Overeating is acceptable, and even encouraged!

Get those chopsticks out—we’ve rounded up a list of venues with insanely good food coming your way.

Donna Chang | CBD

Donna might not have been Chinese, but this Lunar New Year celebration certainly is! Available from February 1 to 6, Donna Chang’s $128pp Chinese New Year menu includes snapper sashimi with native lime and chilli, Southern rock lobster dumplings, and red braised pork with shiitake mushrooms, plus a mandarin tart for dessert. There’ll be lion dancers at dinner time on February 4 and 5, and you can add on paired wines for $50pp, too. You can see the full menu and book your table online here!

Super Bowl Chinese Food | Fortitude Valley

Get thee to the Valley for a real-deal Lunar New Year experience! Superbowl’s banquet menu (available for groups 6+ for $50.80pp) includes Sichuan fried chicken, steamed dim sums, honey-soy black pepper beef, Year of the Tiger macarons and loads more to get you in the festive spirit! There’ll be lion dancers on Friday, February 4 and Saturday 5 at 8:30 pm, plus Sunday, February 6 at 1 pm, and yes, you can still BYO wine! Nab a booking (quickly!) here.

Stanley | CBD

On Saturday, January 29 and Tuesday, February 1, Stanley will be celebrating Chinese New Year with Cantonese specials in addition to their extensive a la carte and banquet menus. Get festive with wok-fried mud crabs from the tank in chilli and garlic sauce, tropical crayfish lo mein with garlic butter and roe (gotta have those noods for longevity!), and imperial-style Peking duck pancakes with caviar. You can catch lion dancers at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm on the Saturday, and at 6:30 pm on the Tuesday to complete the experience! Head to Stanley’s website to book.

Ngon | Paddington

This soulful Vietnamese spot is celebrating Tet in unique style on February 4 and 5: with a Crazy Rich Asians theme! Bust out your best poor-taste ‘fits for these two tasty nights, with a menu featuring pork and prawn dumplings in a yellow curry reduction, Vietnamese Wagyu ceviche, caramelised pork belly with quail egg and bamboo, and loads more. There’ll be lion dances at 9 pm each night, too! Give Ngon a call on 3705 3082 to book your table.

Southside | South Brisbane

Welcome in the Year of the Tiger with a bangin’ banquet at this aesthetic spot nestled among the greenery of Fish Lane. Available for $88pp or $158pp with a two-hour beverage package (including cocktails!) from January 31 February 6, standout dishes include Sichuan tuna tartare with smoked salmon roe, prawn wontons with spiced vinegar, and master stock Wagyu brisket with black garlic and pickled mushroom. Wash it all down with a blood cherry spritz (umeshu, Campari, blood plum and prosecco), and you’re ready to seize the tiger! Check out the food and drinks menus and book your spot (there’ll be lion dancers on the Friday and Saturday nights) here.

BrisAsia Events | Various

Brisbane City Council’s annual celebration of the city’s diverse Asian communities is hosting loads of unique events, with a couple featuring edible highlights! There’s the Laneway Tea Festival brewing up in Fish Lane on February 12 putting a spotlight on all things tea (including a bubble tea-drinking competition!), plus the Southside by Night event on February 11, which will feature some tasty street food stalls. You can check out the full BrisAsia program here.

Treasury Brisbane | CBD

Treasury is giving you options to bring in the Year of The Tiger, with venues Fat Noodle and Mei Wei both serving up festive banquets! At Fat Noodle, you can tuck into a five-course feast for two including scallop dumplings, tamarind prawn and kohlrabi salad, half roasted duck and mango pudding with coconut for $99 for non-members (or $69 for members). Downstairs at Mei Wei, you can share a seven-course banquet with pork dumplings, chicken soup or fish chowder, black pepper beef with mushrooms, and green tea brûlée for $80 for two! We like those odds…
