Brisbane’s backyard has it all – from countryside highs to island breezes, with food pit stops, vineyards, pubs and epic lookout points all in one go!
Here are seven of our favourite drives when the weekend itch hits.
1. Maleny and Montville: For when you are craving wine with a view and a side of cheese
This drive is hinterland perfection, known for its sweeping green hills and breathtaking views. Start with a coffee at Monicas Cafe, stretch your legs on the Obi Obi Boardwalk (might even spot a Platypus if you are lucky), then cool of Gardners Fall and kayak at Baroon Pocket Dam. Wander through the Mary Craincross Scenic Reserve for some rainforest magic overlooking the glasshouse mountains or explore the colourful Melany Botanic Gardens and Bird World. When hunger hits, go long and lazy at The Long Apron or sip your way through the Flame Hill Vineyards with a view. End the day at Gerrad’s Lookout Point before finishing of with some cold pints at the historic Melany hotel and don’t forget to pick up some delicious cheese and yogurt home from Melany Cheese, the ultimate hinterland souvenir.
2. Mount Tamborine: For when waterfalls call your name

Just a 50 mins drive from Brisbane, Mt. Tamborine is a rainforest magic on repeat. Start with Tamborine Mountain Coffee Plantation take a tour and then reward yourself with a fresh cuppa or head to Granny Mac’s hot fudge and stroll around the Gallery Walk for some quirky shops and try Tamborine Tea. Then head into the greenery and wander around the Cedar Creek Falls or Curtis Falls. Or walk under shade at Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk. For lunch, the valley views and woodfire pizza at St Bernard’s Hotel is unbeatable, and if you are a wine and spirit lover, swing by Witches Falls Winery for a tasting that will have you planning you next trip back. Don’t forget to visit the Glow Worm Caves before heading back.
3. Scenic Rim: For when you want mountains and lavender fields all in one go

Big mountains, Big Skies and Big flavours, Scenic Rim has it all. Begin with Bean To? Cafe and then take a drive past Lake Moogerah, hike up to Governer’s chair lookout for a view that will make you forget that you are only 90 mins aways from Brisbane. Lunch is must at Kooroomba Vineyard & Lavender Farm (and yes it’s as dreamy as Instagram says).
4. Mount Mee and Dayboro: For when your country charm meets sunset wine goals

If your idea of bliss is rolling hills, charming pubs and spots that can turn into the perfect picnic blanket spread this your drive. Start with grabbing a coffee from The Old Storehouse and wander the heritage Main street before driving up to D’Aguilar National Park, a place with beautiful picnic spots and great flora and fauna. Head out the Somerset Lookout and then treat yourself with a hearty pub meal at Dayboro Crown Hotel or finish on a high note with dinner and wine pairings at Ocean View Estate Winery & Brewery.
5. Glasshouse Mountain Loop: For when your road trip come with Insta-famous peaks.

It’s not a Queensland road trip without those ancient volcanic peaks. Take the Mount Ngungun summit walk(short but spectacular) or opt for an easier climb up to Wild Horse Mountain Lookout with 360-degree views. For your pit stop, grab a meal at Glasshouse Tavern or relax at Beerwah hotel.
6. Stradbroke Island drive (via ferry): For when only beach breezes would do

Trade the city buses and take a ferry instead to roll straight into island time. Start with brekkie at The Blue Room Café in point look out, then wander the North George Walk, you might even spot a whale if you are lucky. Keep cruising through the coastal roads and when its time to refuel head to the iconic Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel for food. Amity Point is perfect if you want to go for kayaking or fishing and end your day with an chill beer at Straddie Brewing Co.
7. Granite Belt (Stanthrope): For when your weekend needs red wine and fireplaces

Start with a apple pie and cider at Sutton’s Juice factory & cidery before rolling through the cool-climate vineyards like Ballandean Estate Wines or Heritage Estate Wines. Check out the sentimental rocks and breath in the crispy country air at Mt. Marlay Lookout. Walk through the CBD area, to look at Stanthrope’s beautiful street art and for something hearty, finish with craft beer and food at Granite belt brewery.
