The Goompi Trail program, a partnership between SeaLink Southeast Queensland and Quandamooka Elder Matt Burns manages to do both. For more than three decades, Matt Burns has been guiding visitors along the Goompi Trail on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah). This immersive cultural experience introduces guests to the stories, traditions and deep connection that define the Quandamooka people’s relationship with Country. A proud Noonuccal and Nughiman, Matt grew up on Minjerribah and has dedicated his life to sharing his community’s heritage. Through a partnership with SeaLink South East Queensland, his much-loved tour will now reach more visitors who are ready to walk, listen and learn.
The journey begins with a scenic SeaLink ferry ride from Cleveland, followed by a traditional Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony beneath the native gums. As guests walk the island’s shoreline, the tour shares generations of knowledge about native plants, traditional practices, and sites of deep cultural significance. Between the sound of the waves and the rustle of the gum leaves, visitors experience the spirit of Minjerribah through the eyes of its First People.
Beyond the trail, guests can join interactive workshops, from spear and boomerang throwing to dance and didgeridoo lessons. All co-designed by Matt, these activities keep the living traditions of the Quandamooka people alive through movement, rhythm and community.
End the day with a drink and lunch at Straddie Brewing Co, continue the conversation about sustainability, respect and the power of culture to connect us all. You’ll leave with full hearts, sandy feet and a brand-new perspective on the island you thought you knew.
Tours run weekly on Fridays, with bookings available year-round. Each experience departs from Cleveland’s Toondah Harbour, making it an easy day trip from Brisbane.
As Matt says, “It’s not just a tour. It’s a cultural conversation.”
And it’s one every Queenslander should have at least once.
