The Brisbane bucket list: 10 things to stuff your face with in July

The rest of the world might not think it’s cold when the temp drops below 20 degrees, but we do and we’ve got a hankering for some cozy comfort food. And of course we’d never stop at one, we’re going to be eating our way through sweet, salty and every comfort food in between, all month long. Starting with these 10 dishes to brave the chill (just put a light jacket on, ok) for in July. #1. Bounty pancakes | Elixir Coffee HQ | Stafford Having dessert for breakfast just went next level with Elixir Coffee’s stack of Bounty pancakes piled with house made Nutella ganache, toasted coconut, chocolate crumble and ice cream! #2. The Mother of All Tacos | Mucho Mexicano | South Bank Holy guacamole. Mucho Mexicano has thrown their sombrero into the ring for the best Mexican fare in Brisbane with this board of slow cooked lamb, pork or brisket to pile on soft tortillas with salsa, sour cream and avocado! #3. Night Noodle Markets | Cultural Centre | South Bank Yasss! Bulk bao buns, oodles of noodles and all the dumplings you can stuff in your mouth are back, and you’ll find them in the Cultural Centre from July 20-31. Grab your chopsticks and go! #4. PB & J Milkshake | Jackalope Slow Foods | Markets When you can literally see the jam in a PB & J milkshake, you know you’re in for a good time, and this bottle of rich Maleny milk, house made ice cream and peanut butter is definitely a good time. #5. Meatball banh mi | District 1 | Fortitude Valley If there is one dish that can make us go from hating winter to loving every second, it’s this steaming bowl of rich pork meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce with a side of crusty Vietnamese roll. Holy. Yum. #6. Rising Sun | The End | West End You’ll certainly want to stay up until the sun rises with a few of these under your belt. Japanese whiskey, sweet umeshu, juniper liqueur, lemon, honey, green tea and bitters come together for a Japanese twist on a hot toddy you’ll want to say konnichiwa to. #7. Portuguese custard tarts | Lisboa Caffe | Markets Your local bakery’s custard tarts have got nothing on these guys, who hand make Portuguese style tarts that will have you going back for seconds. And thirds. And fourths. #8. Unlimited pirikara fries | Bird’s Nest | West End $5.50 is all you need to get your hands on all the pirikara seasoned fries with Japanese mayo you can eat between 5.30-6.30pm daily. We take that as a challenge. #9. Naan pizza | It’s Mirchi | Bulimba Just when you though butter chicken couldn’t get any better, It’s Mirchi goes and puts it on naan and makes pizza! Available every weekend for lunch, they’ve also got a vegetable samosa and lamb rogan josh version – but we were sold at ‘naan pizza.’ #10. Orange blossom doughnuts | British Colonial Co. | Hawthorne Frankly, we’ll take any excuse to eat doughnuts for breakfast, but this new east side spot makes it all too worth the calories, serving them up with a side of house churned ice cream. Happy eating! Words by Ranyhyn Akui Image by Judit Losh
