MUST-DO EVENTS THIS AUGUST

August in Brisbane arrives with that crisp, razor-sharp blue sky that practically begs you to step outside. As we indulge in these final weeks of winter and prepare to greet the first whispers of spring, there’s no better excuse to wander, indulge, and eat exceptionally well.

From quiet-luxury hotel openings to high-wire culinary experiments, the city’s dining and social calendar is firing on all cylinders.

Here are six essential pop-ups, openings, and weekend rituals to add to your Brisbane radar this month.

1. Reset Your Palate at Batica Dining

The Vibe: Understated, warm, and restorative, like taking a collective exhale in the middle of the CBD.

Hotel dining can so easily tumble into predictable corporate gloss, but Batica, The Westin’s brand-new signature restaurant, eschews all that for pure culinary restoration. Named after the concept of a sabbatical, the space embraces a philosophy of unpretentious, honest nourishment where Executive Chef Massimo Speroni champions hyper-local producers across a menu that completely sidelines culinary gimmickry.

Think delicate Gold Coast Rocky Point Cobia Sashimi, earth-driven Emu Tartare spiked with native muntries, and bespoke drinks like a native Tamborine Mountain Lilly Pilly Gin.

2. Risk the “Burger Omakase” at Midtown Bar

The Vibe: Playful, nostalgic, and delightfully new york.

Unapologetically cheeky yet technically sharp, Midtown Bar is subverting the sacred tradition of Japanese omakase to deliver a wild five-course journey through high-low comfort food. Chef Dan hosts just 10 adventurous souls per seating ($79pp, Wednesday through Saturday) for an intimate meal.

Expect a luxurious Moreton Bay Bug Burger dripping with kimchi slaw, an open-faced Chicken Nugget Burger crowned with hot honey and Siberian caviar, and a clever dessert “burger” made with velvety chocolate ice cream sandwiched between vanilla cupcake slices.

At Midtown, there’s never too many burgers.

3. Go Full Crimson at Night Feast’s ‘Better Off Red’

The Vibe: Theatrical, intoxicating, and gloriously decadent.

As the month-long food festival Night Feast takes over the Powerhouse, its showstopping centrepiece, Better Off Red, promises a genuinely dramatic afternoon on 16 August. Chefs Mimmo Miceli (Bosco) and Jake Nicholson (Blackbird) are joining forces for a single-afternoon, flame-kissed feast anchored entirely by rich, ruby hues.

Expect flame-grilled spring lamb, cider-glazed chorizo, and beetroot-cured salmon, paired with flowing d’Arenberg red wines and bitter-sweet Aperol cocktails while live operatic performances wander right through the lawn.

4. Unwind at West Village’s Sunday Sessions

The Vibe: Family-friendly, breezy, and effortlessly wholesome.

August’s cool, sun-drenched afternoons practically demand slow-paced wandering. West Village is answering the call with a series of free, community-focused Sunday Sessions (Sunday 9, 16, & 23 August, from 2-5pm) designed to prolong that fleeting weekend feeling just a little bit longer before spring kicks in.

Grab takeaway flatbreads or gelato from surrounding West Village foodies, stretch out by The Village Hut, and let the live acoustic sets drift over you while the kids chase roaming bubble blowers.

5. Indulge in the $40 Champagne & Lobster Club at Riverbar & Kitchen

The Vibe: A pocket of mid-week opulence right along the riverbank.

Riverbar and Kitchen’s annual Champagne Club special is a winter-closing ritual worth keeping. All month long, they’re pairing icy flutes of Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial with a downright indulgent seaside sandwich that turns an ordinary weekday lunch into an occasion.

You’re getting fresh, sweet lobster meat tucked alongside mortadella, pickled green tomato, and a kick of spicy mayo between house-made crisps and crusty bread.

6. Nab “The Beatrice” at La Favolosa

Website | Instagram | Facebook
The Vibe: Bustling, aromatic, and unmistakably authentic.

In Italy, Beatrice translates to “blessed” or “bringer of joy”, and some names are truly made to be lived up to. If you’ve noticed a perpetual, slow-moving queue winding down Boundary Street lately, La Favolosa is the culprit, baking golden, dimpled schiacciata flatbread fresh throughout the day.

Available for the month of August, “Beatrice” proves its title in a single bite: a decadent, texture-rich harmony of savory capocollo, creamy gorgonzola, aged grana cheese, a drizzle of sweet honey, and rich EVOO stuffed into hot, crusty bread.
