Sunnybank Welcomes the Year of the Horse with Brisbane’s First-Ever Lunar New Year Drone Show

Brisbane get ready to look up.

Sunnybank Plaza and Sunny Park are ushering in the Year of the Horse with a week-long Lunar New Year celebration from Monday 16 February to Sunday 22 February; and it’s set to wrap with a sky-high spectacle you won’t want to miss.

Across the festival week, Sunnybank will transform into a vibrant cultural hub filled with lion and dragon dance performances, live music from AusOriental Orchestra and Queensland Chinese Orchestra, Tai Chi displays and traditional Chinese calligraphy demonstrations.

Bring your family to enjoy hands-on workshops, including lantern, mask and fan painting, lucky charm bracelet making, balloon twisting, and festive photo opportunities with a Year of the Horse balloon sculpture.

And, of course, this is Sunnybank; so food is front and centre. With more than 70 dine-in and takeaway venues across Sunnybank Plaza and Sunny Park, some of Brisbane’s most authentic Asian cuisine can be enjoyed, from yum cha favourites to traditional celebratory dishes. Food Discovery Tours will also run during the festival, showcasing beloved local flavours.

There’s even a chance to win an $8,000 holiday for two, thanks to EVA Air.

The celebration doesn’t stop there. While the week-long festival runs from 16–22 February, the festivities will culminate in a special rooftop finale on Saturday 28 February. For the first time ever, Brisbane will host a Lunar New Year drone show, with 200 drones lighting up the sky in a choreographed performance just after 7pm, followed by what’s set to be Brisbane’s largest Lunar New Year fireworks display at 8pm.

Just 20 minutes from the CBD, Sunnybank’s Lunar New Year celebration promises culture, community and unforgettable festive experiences.
