One of the many forgotten suburbs of Brisbane is making itself unforgettable! Moorooka has the potential to be more multicultural and welcoming than West End and we aren’t even mad about it. Open your mind, your tummy and tuck into the outstanding multicultural offerings Moorooka has within its many corners.
TODD & PUP
This little Moorooka cutie is sure to see your all-day breakfast dreams come to fruition with freshly baked homemade muffins each morning and all the space for you and your favourite furry friend. Not only do they provide the goods with Cookies & Cream Buttermilk Waffles and a dangerously good Haloumi & Sweet Potato Stack, they also have little specials that sneak onto their menu you from time to time; Fried Chicken Benedict and Breakfast Okonomoyaki, don’t mind if I do. Fried Chicken Benedict. Genius.
SIDE STREET KITCHEN
Looking for something simple but damn delicious? Well look now further, Side Street Kitchen have got you covered, with no miso paste glaze or salted charcoal foam in sight. These guys do simple breakfast food and an extensive sandwich list that is all done to a T (and doesn’t cost you a limb just for some eggs). Relax amongst the trees and munch on some tasty treats that you swear could have been made by your mumma herself.
YESHI BUNA ETHIO-AFRICAN
If you’re looking for something new and the real deal, Yeshi Buna Ethio-African has got your back and your hungry little tummy, with authentic Ethiopian food and drink (try the traditional coffee, it’s a game changer) that will see you being practically welcomed into the family with their warming hospitality. From breakfast through to dinner, there will be an array of options, but if dining with groups, we strongly suggest the Banquet Platters.
MADE IN AFRICA
Being strong advocates of African food and Ethiopian hospitality, Tesfaye and the team at Made in Africa are going to show you the ropes of what it is all about. From eating with injera and customary traditions in their culture, Made In Africa will see you fully immerse with Key Wot (beef simmered in a red pepper sauce seasoned with garlic and cardamon), Shiro (split pea stew made with roasted, spiced and ground split peas) and Gomen Be Sega (Sautéed lamb, kai lan, onions, herbed butter, garlic and ginger.
Their food is some of the tastiest and interesting use of spices we have seen and you will leave with a food baby to prove it!
CUSH SUDANESE
Push past Made in Africa in Moorooka Arcade and down the stairs into Cush Sundanese where you will be greeted with traditional Sudanese food, that the lovely owners have hand prepared. Stews, banquets and Sudanese fried fish are what they are known for, but be sure to stick around for desert, Bassbossa is deeeelish!
NO. 7 COFFEE
Having a go-to coffee nook is a must and Moorooka has a sweet little gem. Situated in Moorvale Lane, they serve up their own speciality coffee blend as well as a house chai made from fresh spices, along with tasty pastries that will be sure to satisfy any morning tea cravings! They also have your Friday evening covered with ‘Melodies in Moorvale Lane’ seeing local musicians jamming and yummy food and drinks available until 8pm.
SLIPSTREAM BREWING + HELIOS BREWING | YEERONGPILLY
Who would have thought that there are some award-winning breweries in our backyard? Just outside Moorooka, Slipstream and Helios Brewing are still relatively new to the ranks of craft beer with Slipstream celebrating their 1st birthday on the 9thJune (WEEEEEHHH!), but don’t you worry, these bad boys are well and truly earning their stripes! Keeping it casual and a match made in heaven, food trucks will be there to feed you while brew enthusiasts will be there to chat about all their frothy varieties and then some. Be sure to check their opening hours though, as these guys tend to have a later start to their week (lucky for some…)!
MACONDO CAFÉ | SALISBURY
Not only is this place the cutest little retreat (in Moorooka), it also has Latin food with Colombian Passion! Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, Macondo Café is the ultimate all-day hangout, with more vegetarian and vegan options than you can poke a stick at. Traditional Colombian food can only be accompanied with welcoming Colombian hospitality and maybe more side servings of guacamole than we can consume.
