Suburban Foodies: Hamilton

Kingsford Smith drive traffic, airport hotels and the port of Brisbane - Hamilton is surely just a dead zone between the Ascot Racecourse and the CBD right?

You’ll be pleasantly surprised to know there’s more to this riverside suburb than just sighting the Queen Mary drifting along the great brown snake. It’s established itself as a vibrant food hub – whatever you’re in the mood for.

Portside Wharf | 39 Hercules St

Portside has something for everyone, from cheap and cheerful to cocktails and fine dining. Caffeine addict? Pineapple Express have your back. The team pump out delicious Campos coffee alongside fresh wraps, salads and their best selling COCOWHIP.

If you’re less about chia seeds and more about hot chips you can’t go past Hello Harry. The brain child of Tony Kelly (Stokehouse) and Scott Hoskins, Hello Harry is about delicious, no fuss burgers and icy cold craft beer.

Fine dining? Portside has you sorted too with options like Sono and Belvedere Bar and Grill. Finishing off your night? With a beautiful view of the river, spend a few hours sipping on cocktails at Byblos for an evening you won’t forget – depending on how many cocktails you have.

Eat Street | 221D Macarthur Ave

With over 70 vendors Brisbane’s famous Eat Street Market is a foodie’s Mecca. We recommend bringing some comfortable pants and an appetite because you’re not going to be able to stop at just one shop. Organised into cultural areas including LaneWay, MainDeck and TraderSquare you might be slightly overwhelmed by the sheer choice. Take your time, grab a drink, create a game plan and get eating!

Fonzie Abbott | 30 Racecourse Rd

Stop by Racecourse Road for some sweet FA, Fonzie Abbott that is. Impress your friends by being able to differentiate between the three signature blends, or for something extra fancy try their rotating single origin bean. Not just expertly brewed coffees, Fonzie Abbott has a selection of bagels, wraps and sweet treats. So get carbed, get caffeinated, get into Fonzies.

Samies Fresh Food Market |1/33 Remora Rd

Feeling salty? For Brisbane’s freshest seafood you can’t go past Samies. If you like a challenge go the whole prawn and take home an entire fish, or if something smaller is on your horizon, grab a dozen oysters and some fresh molluscs and call it a day. Samies also has you covered on lazy days with some of the best fish and chips in Brisbane.

Workshop 14 | 14/8 Hercules St

With its industrial design, local beers on tap and a boutique wine selection, Workshop 14 is a welcome addition to Hamilton’s nightlife. The first small bar to open in Hamilton, the venue is making a splash with the locals. Stop in and get boozy on the al fresco terrace, or tuck into some of the rustic pizzas and hot bites on offer.

Gino’s | 468 Kingsford Smith Dr

Serving the Brisbane masses for over 30 years, Gino’s is a Brisbane institution. The Hamilton favourite has a wide variety of dishes including seafood, veal and classic pizza and pasta. The business just changed hands, but not to worry – they’ve kept it in the family with cousin Eddie Barakat stepping up to the plate.

Milani House of Gelato | 4/53 Racecourse Rd

Voted Australia’s best Gelato in 2017, you cannot go past Milani. With classic gelato flavours like hazelnut, dark chocolate and rum & raisin, Milani also offers a wide range of refreshing sorbets and yogurts. Not just for kids birthday parties anymore, the shop also specialises in gelato cakes – ice-cream cakes for adults? Yes please.

So next time you’re stuck on Kingsford Smith let you mind wander to what you could eat next. Whether it’s gelato, fine dining or just a cheeky coffee Hamilton is proving it’s more than just a suburb to pass through.
