Originally staged in 2023 under the direction of Artistic Director Peter Evans, this evocative take on Shakespeare’s most famous love story dives deep into the passion, danger and heartbreak at the heart of the tragedy.
Audiences will be swept away by dynamic newcomers Madeline Li and Ryan Hodson, who step into the roles of the star-crossed lovers. Their fateful meeting beneath a glittering night sky sets them on a perilous journey, as they risk everything to defy the violent and unending feud between their families.
Peter Evans describes the play as “the saddest of sad stories” but also “one of the funniest and naughtiest tragedies ever written.” This production captures the chaos of a community torn apart by selfishness and ancient grudges, and the devastating cost paid by its young people. With a young, energetic cast bringing a fresh spark to this timeless work, Evans promises a Romeo and Juliet you will not want to miss.
Critics agree, with the Sydney Morning Herald calling it “a cut above,” The Age praising it as “elegant and lively,” and Time Out declaring it “nothing less than exhilarating.”
Romeo and Juliet will take the stage at Brisbane Powerhouse on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 October 2025, with an AUSLAN interpreted performance at 2pm on the Saturday.
