From the classic coastal pub to some unexpected surprises, this small town with some jaw-dropping beaches is a roadtrip waiting to happen!
Read on for our picks of where to wine and dine once you arrive.
Karrikin | Coldstream Street
No doubt the most gourmet joint in town, Karrikin is a neighbourhood eatery with a focus on sustainable, native cuisine. With a menu split into earth, land and sea categories, you know you’re in for a super seasonal experience, and with dishes simply described as “carrot, kelp, macadamia”, “kangaroo, yoghurt, Davidson plum, zucchini” and “crab toast, egg, fingerlime”, you know it’s guaranteed to be a tasty one too!
Clarence Distillery | Neptune Place
Living for another regional distillery to explore! Clarence is about all things gin, making their signature The Duke (featuring lemon myrtle and Clarence Valley botanicals) as well as rosella gin. They’re all about manufacturing the good stuff most of the time, but you can visit to enjoy a drink or tasting paddle on Friday from 1:30 to 6ish and Saturdays from midday to 6ish.
Sandbar | Clarence Street
Whether you start or end your day at Sandbar, you know it’s going to be delicious! This spot is all about classic, satisfying breakies and local seafood, served tapas-style in dishes like kingfish crudo, bugs in burnt butter and deep-fried squid.
Paradiso Restaurant + Bar | Clarence Street
This pan-Asian spot serves up BIG flavours across their menu and cocktail list. Stop in for handmade Yamba prawn wontons with aged black vinegar and chilli oil, tempura eggplant bao and Cantonese crispy duck with hot and numbing sauce! Don’t leave without browsing the cocktail list, which includes big-hitters like the Paradisa (Brookies gin, cold-pressed watermelon, agave and mint) and the Gin Gin (Tanqueray, shaken with ginger syrup, muddled mint and lime).
Wishbone | Yamba Street
An old-school chicken shop to hit every spot, Wishbone serves up local free-range chooks in style! We’re talking 1/4 roast chickens with chips and gravy (Hangover? What hangover?), Buffalo wings with blue cheese sauce, and sweet and sticky bush plum wings, alongside a whole range of burgers, chicken and otherwise, and some creative and colourful salads.
Pacific Hotel | Pilot Street
Perched on the hill overlooking the beach, this is a breathtaking example of the great Aussie seaside pub! Serving up a well-executed menu of pub classics, expect oysters, crispy fried squid, rump steaks with chips and salad, and burgers to satiate any ocean swimmer’s hunger. (The rooms aren’t too shabby, either.)
Beachwood Cafe | High Street
For authentic Turkish flavours in an unexpected part of the world, Beachwood more than delivers! This quaint cafe serves up breakfast and lunch dishes including menemen baked eggs, Turkish-style sardines, bread and dips, and lamb kofte. Even better? It’s licenced, so you can pair everything with a Turkish beer!
