MUST-DO EVENTS THIS JULY

The days are shorter, the mornings are colder, and the temptation to stay at home is stronger than ever.

Luckily, Brisbane is making a compelling case for leaving the house this July.

Queensland Garden Show

The best gardens aren’t built overnight. You plant in winter, enjoy in spring.

Where: Coronation Avenue, Nambour
Website | Instagram | Facebook

Returning to Nambour this July, Queensland’s premier gardening event brings together more than 360 exhibitors, dozens of nurseries and thousands of plants, making it the perfect place to stock up on inspiration before the warmer months arrive. Whether you’re dreaming of a flourishing veggie patch, a backyard makeover or simply keeping your houseplants alive, you’ll find plenty of ideas to take home.

Beyond the plants, visitors can enjoy free talks, workshops and demonstrations from some of Australia’s leading gardening experts, along with food stalls, floral displays and family-friendly activities throughout the weekend. In other words, expect to leave with significantly more plants than you planned for.

Consider this your invitation to stop and smell the flowers.

Goodlife Ferny Grove

The version of you that thrives in summer starts showing up in winter.

Where: Shop 3, 122 Ferny Way, Ferny Grove
Website | Instagram | Facebook

Winter is full of reasons to skip a workout. GoodLife Ferny Grove is offering a few reasons not to.

The next-generation health club combines premium training spaces, Reform Pilates, group fitness classes and state-of-the-art equipment, bringing a fresh approach to fitness to Brisbane’s north-west.

What sets Goodlife Ferny Grove apart is the addition of the Revive Recovery Suite, where members can unwind with ice baths, infrared saunas, red light therapy, massage chairs and compression boots. More reminiscent of a day spa than a traditional gym, it’s proof that fitness is no longer just about how hard you train, but how well you recover. Add in coach-led workouts and a dedicated performance zone, and you’ve got plenty of reasons to leave the doona behind this winter.

Think of it as a gift from winter you to summer you.

Red Fish Blue Fish

Why brave the ocean when you can order from it?

Where: 15 Manning St, South Brisbane
Website | Instagram | Facebook

Luckily, Midtown’s Red Fish Blue Fish experience makes a compelling case to stay on dry land/

Celebrating premium seafood and coastal flavours, the multi-course dining experience curated by Chef Daniel Miletic is designed for long lunches, lingering dinners and anyone who’d rather eat the catch than catch it themselves. For $89 per person, diners can expect everything from salmon sashimi and soft-shell crab charcoal buns alongside comforting winter favourites like Provençal fish stew and baked goldband snapper.

And because no seafood experience is complete without ice cream afterwards, the experience finishes with coconut-crumbed vanilla ice cream, fried and served with dulce de leche. Available Wednesday to Saturday throughout July, it’s proof that winter has its perks after all.

Whisky Whisky

If there was ever a month to swap spritzes for something stronger, it’s July.

Where: Fish Lane, South Brisbane
Website | Instagram | Facebook

Whisky Whisky is pouring into Fish Lane on Saturday 11 July, bringing together more than 100 Australian and international whiskies for an afternoon dedicated to sipping, sampling and discovering your next favourite dram.

Hosted by Supping Club, the fifth edition of the event will showcase more than 30 whisky brands, alongside rare dream drams, exclusive pours and opportunities to meet the people behind the bottles. From smooth, honeyed drops to bold, smoky whiskies with a lingering finish, there’ll be plenty to keep both seasoned enthusiasts and curious newcomers happy.

Your ticket includes a dream-dram token for a premium pour, lunch from Hello Please and a take-home tasting glass, making it easy to settle in for an afternoon of liquid gold and barrel-aged discoveries.

Think of it as professional palate development.

Where: Fish Lane Town Square, South Brisbane

Hosted by Aboriginal Art Co as part of NAIDOC Week, this special edition of the Footsteps: First Nations Art Tour offers an opportunity to connect with the stories, culture and creativity of First Nations artists. Beginning with a cup of lemon myrtle tea, the guided experience explores a collection of public artworks throughout Fish Lane, uncovering the meaning, inspiration and cultural significance behind each piece.

More than an art walk, it’s an opportunity to connect with the perspectives of First Nations artists and gain a deeper appreciation for the works that shape one of Brisbane’s most-loved precincts. Along the way, expect meaningful conversations, creative activities and a fresh understanding of the stories woven throughout the city.

Because every artwork has a story worth knowing.

West Village ‘Sunday Sessions’

Brisbane Winters are too good to spend indoors

Where: The Village Hut, West Village
Website | Instagram | Facebook

Brisbane winters are made for afternoons spent outdoors, and West Village’s Sunday Sessions are making the most of them.

Taking over The Village Hut on 5, 12, and 19 July every 02:00-05:00PM, the free family-friendly series combines live acoustic music, face painting and roaming giant bubble blowers for an afternoon of relaxed entertainment. While the kids chase bubbles and get their faces painted, parents can settle in with something delicious from one of West Village’s many dining spots and soak up the atmosphere.

With winter sunshine, live music and plenty to keep little ones entertained, it’s the perfect excuse to spend a little longer outdoors before the new week begins.

Because some weekends deserve a proper send-off.

James St Food and Wine Trail

Some trails are made for hiking. This one’s made for grazing.

Where: James Street, Fortitude Valley
Website | Instagram | Facebook

Returning to the Valley this July, James Street’s Food and Wine Trail turns one of Brisbane’s most stylish precincts into one long, leisurely lunch. On Sunday, 26 July from 10am to 4pm, the self-guided trail celebrates the street’s resident venues, chefs and local producers, the good people who make James Street one of the city’s most iconic eating and drinking pockets, with a day of sampling, sipping and grazing your way down the strip.

Designed like a menu you can walk through, the experience unfolds from The Main Course to The Sides and finally The Afters, giving you every excuse to linger a little longer. Spend the afternoon hopping between restaurants, bars and providores, collecting bites, sips and stories along the way. Whether you’re chasing standout wines, stretching a long lunch into the evening or simply soaking up the atmosphere, it’s an easy-going winter outing with maximum reward and minimal planning. No reservations. No rushing. Just a plate in hand and a delicious excuse to explore.

Because every great trail deserves a sweet finish.

Ovolo Brisbane

Some gateways require a flight. This one just requires checking in.

Where: Fortitude Valley
Website | Instagram | Facebook

When winter starts making home feel a little too comfortable, Ovolo Brisbane offers a convincing reason to venture out, and an even better excuse to stay the night. Located in the heart of Fortitude Valley, the boutique hotel places you within some of Brisbane’s best restaurants, bars and live music venues, while the CBD, South Bank, New Farm and Brisbane Powerhouse are all just a short stroll away. Inside, personality takes centre stage, with vibrant interiors, bold artworks and design-led spaces that feel more like a gallery than hotel lobby.

Of course, once you’ve checked in, leaving becomes entirely optional. Spend the afternoon poolside on the rooftop, sip your way through the cocktail list at Above Rooftop Bar, or settle in at Kazba for flavour-packed Middle Eastern share plates designed for lingering over. Add lightning-fast Wi-Fi, 24-hour gym access and a V.I.Pooch package for your four-legged companion, and suddenly checkout feels less like a necessity and more like a gentle suggestion.

Because the best city escapes are the ones where someone else makes the bed.

Dreamworld Winterfest

Snow in Queensland? Stranger things have happened.

Where: Dreamworld, Coomera
Website | Instagram | Facebook

Australia’s biggest theme park is embracing winter in spectacular fashion these school holidays, trading sunshine and splash zones for snow-filled fun, ice slides and a festive chill that feels worlds away from the Gold Coast. Running from 27 June to 12 July, Winterfest transforms Dreamworld into a seasonal playground, complete with toboggan-ready ice slides, falling snow effects, live entertainment and themed shows that bring a little winter magic to every corner of the park. Better yet, much of the experience is included with general admission, while extras like ice skating and marshmallow toasting offer even more reasons to stay a little longer.

But the real sparkle arrives after dark. Across three special evenings, 27 June, 3 July and 4 July, Dreamworld flips the calendar and celebrates Christmas in July, turning the park into a twinkling festive wonderland. Expect a walk-through winter village, appearances from Santa and Mrs Claus, dazzling light displays, a Christmas spectacular and a fireworks finale worthy of the North Pole itself. Throw in a festive buffet and the inevitable family photo in matching Christmas jumpers, and you’ve got the kind of holiday memory that lingers long after the school holidays are over.

Because if Christmas is worth celebrating once, it’s probably worth celebrating twice.
