Market stall of the week: Mankira Coffee

You’d be right in assuming that coffee is as essential to our day as oxygen. So we simply can’t walk past any market stall giving off that rich aroma that gets our hearts beating a bit faster of a morning. This week, our noses led us all the way to Mankira Coffee, where the beans are jam-packed with personality as well as the sweet, sweet smell of freshly roasted coffee. Sourced from Ethiopia, the beans come from coffee trees grown at a high altitude, creating a more pronounced flavour profile, not to mention the fact that the Ethiopian coffee bean is part of a rich history of tradition and culture. Local legend has it that in the Mankira forest in the southern highlands of Ethiopia, the coffee bean was born. Thank you coffee gods! The man behind bringing all this high quality, caffiene-laced goodness to us here in Brisbane is Tewodros Fekadu, who launched Mankira Coffee last year. Originally from Ethiopia, and now living on the Gold Coast, Tewodros’ passion for his birth country’s coffee is heartwarming. And hand-warming, because it means we can wrap our hands around a warm cappuccino. All of Mankira Coffee’s beans are put through a rigorous selection process to make sure only the most superior beans are chosen, which are then roasted right here on the Gold Coast. Available in single origin and Ethiopian Blend, they can be ground to order for online orders or wherever you find them at markets around town. You can catch Tewodros and his choice beans at various markets, including the Boggo Road Markets, Kelvin Grove Village Markets and the Jan Powers Farmer’s Markets in the city. Just be sure to check out their Facebook page to keep up to date on their whereabouts and what’s new! Words by Alice Ramsay
