It only took us one bite of Lisboa Caffe’s scrumptious Portugese custard tarts before we were hooked. The flaky pastry, the rich custard centre, even the generous sprinkle of cinnamon on top – it all combined to make a sweet mouthful we’d definitely go back for, over and over again.
No ordinary custard tarts, these babies are all handmade with fresh ingredients to a traditional recipe, with the duo behind their creation dedicated to bringing the real taste of their hometown to Brisbane. Popping up at markets around town each week, Andre and Joao are both originally from Portugal, and on finding Brisbane a little lacking in the flavours of the European country, decided to do something about it.
It’s not just creamy custard tarts you’ll find on their menu, they’ve got a whole lineup of savoury offerings too. Tuck into an early morning bacon and egg tart, spice up your lunch with their chicken and herb number (which tastes a little like the best homemade chicken pie we’ve ever eaten), fill up on the pumpkin and pistachio tarts with lemon and yoghurt or go adventurous with the salty cod tart. But our fave has to be their goat’s tart with topped with walnuts and honey – we’d happily eat half a dozen all to ourselves (and we have).
Tarting it up isn’t all these guys do well, and they’re hoping to one day open the doors to their very own restaurant, where they can introduce Brisbane to the real taste of Portugal. But until then, you can get your hands on Lisboa Caffe’s goodies at the Jan Power’s Markets on Wednesdays in the city and at the Powerhouse on Saturdays, as well at the Milton Markets on Sundays.
