Mamaku spices up the north side

Indonesian fare probably isn’t particularly high on your list of favourite cuisines, but after a visit to Mamaku, Clayfield’s newest dining spot, it may just wind up in your top 5. A cosy, hole-in-the-wall restaurant just off Sandgate Road, Mamaku may be small in size, but there’s nothing small about the flavours coming out of their kitchen. Nab a table inside under the greenery hanging from crisp, white walls and you’ll be in for a delicious, spice-filled experience, with some familiar and not-so-familiar dishes to sample. Mamaku means ‘my mother,’ and that’s the inspiration behind the menu here. Owner and chef Mie Mie has drawn on a rich heritage of Indonesian, Chinese, Hakkanese and Timorese, blending traditional recipes with new ingredients and techniques to create a menu that will have you wanting to come back and explore again and again. mamaku clayfield restaurants 2Perfect to share (or keep to yourself – we won’t judge), the menu features small plates like crispy fried chicken wings, vegetable fritters and pork dim sims, as well as plenty of mains. Once your tastebuds are well and truly intrigued, tuck into flavoursome slow cooked beef rendang or tender pork belly that will have you licking the bowl clean, or get really adventurous and sample the spicy whole chilli barramundi. If you’ve popped in for lunch, you might prefer to stick to the lighter noodle dishes, like BBQ pork mie goreng, beef ball mie ayam (a South East Asian noodle dish) or the slurp-worthy laksa. You can even take it away if you’re in a hurry. There is no drinks menu just yet, but BYO is welcome, making this an already popular spot for weekend catch ups – so you might want to book if you plan on stopping by. Plans are in the works to start dishing up traditional coffee and sweets in the mornings, but in the meantime, Mamaku is open 7 days for lunch and dinner at 730 Sandgate Road, Clayfield.
