Let's taco 'bout Brisbane's tastiest tacos

Who needs a knife and fork when you’ve got a tortilla?

Whether you like them soft, hard (or in the words of the Old El Paso girl – why not have both?), dripping-down-your-hands juicy or extra-jalapeños-please hot, we’re here to spill the beans on Brisbane’s best spots to tuck into a taco or two or three.

BAJA | FORTITUDE VALLEY

None of that cheesy Tex-Mex stuff here… Baja is all about authentic Northern Mexican flavours with a modern edge, but we’ll let their 10/10 duck carnitas tacos do the talking. Seriously, try them immediately.

SOUTH AUSTIN | MOUNT GRAVATT

Carnivores, we got you. From the team behind Barbecue Mafia comes South Austin–a pop-up taqueria working out of Cenzo’s Cafe in Mt Gravatt.

The result of combining classic barbecue and bold Mexican flavours? Drool-worthy tacos loaded with smoky pork carnitas, luscious lamb, or the best of the best: birria-style.

MAMA TACO | WEST END

A contemporary taqueria and mezcaleria, Mama Taco’s aesthetic will catch your eye before their eats steal your heart. With combos that are almost too crazy to be true (we’re looking at you, king prawn with watermelon radish, raspberry, chipotle mayo, salsa verde and queso fresco) it’s a big “woah Mama” from us.

EL CAMINO CANTINA | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

We all know a taco’s best friend is a margarita, and El Camino Cantina is serving up both with colourful charm (and sombreros, of course). Their Taco Topia menu is loaded with some cool concoctions like the El Mac (beef, cheese lettuce, pickles, onions, special sauce) and the Escobar (chorizo, mango and jalapeno salsa, feta, coriander).

RED HOOK | BRISBANE CBD

What do Chinese food and tacos have in common? Not much, except when you walk down Gresham Lane, pop into Red Hook and discover the peking duck taco. With slaw, fried shallots and hoi sin sauce it’s definitely worth ducking in for!

EL PLANTA | SOUTH BRISBANE

Vegan pals, we got youuuu! Fish Lane’s plant-based taco joint El Planta uses fruit and veg in genius ways that will give you a Mex fix without the meat. Our pick of the pack is the tacos al pastor, using jackfruit instead of pork and finished with a fresh pineapple and orange salsa.

COMUNA CANTINA | CBD + EVERTON PARK

If Comuna Cantina has taught us anything, it’s that one taco is never enough. Have juan, have two, have some more – with seven kinds of tacos to eat your way through, you’ll have to come back time and time again! If you’re looking for something a little less carb-laden, the healthy taco bowl is #summerbod approved.

CHEEKY POKE | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Bet you didn’t think you’d see a Japanese/Hawaiian/Mexican hybrid on this list. Across their multiple stores, Cheeky Poke dishes up nori or wonton tacos stuffed with a range of sashimi, meats, and veg. Taco your pick!

LA PATRONA | TENERIFFE

Some of our city’s most authentic Mexican fare, La Patrona offers a dining experience inspired by the region of Bajío. The zingy fish tacos will have you swimming back for seconds, while the porky tacos al pastor have us pigging out big time.

Let’s talk about Mex, baby.
