Let Minnow Café lands in Clayfield

Landing with a splash in a quiet street in Clayfield, Let Minnow Café is a quirky fish-themed eatery that ticks all the boxes. Anywhere that loves a good food pun as much as we do isn’t going to make an anemone of us, but Let Minnow isn’t just good for a giggle. With plenty of nods to the old Clayfield Aquarium it took over, including a bright yellow fishy wallpaper, the café is an adorable oasis that manages to be all at once cute and sophisticated. let minnow 2No detail has been left to chance, from the menu that tells you were every element of the café has been sourced right down to the hidden fish puns in the potted herbs (seriously – take a look). As far as suburban cafes go, this place is o-fish-ially one of our new faves. For breakfast, there’s options for all, whether you’re lactose or gluten intolerant, vegetarian, or have a youngster in tow. Their signature dish is, of course, The Tinned Minnows, with sardines, soft boiled eggs and salsa verde on sourdough, but there’s plenty of classic brekkies too. Savoury mince is given a makeover with a fried egg, grilled cherry tomatoes and house BBQ sauce, while sweet tooths will love the wholemeal waffle with cinnamon ice cream and the option of bacon. Can’t make up your mind? Try the breakfast sliders and combine up to three of the savoury mince, bacon and egg, pesto mushroom and smoked salmon sliders. let minnow 3The lunch menu is simple but satisfying, with fish tacos piled with avocado salsa, red cabbage and chipotle sauce, a weekly burger special and plenty of salads and sandwiches which change on a daily basis. But if you’ve got room, make sure you order the milkshake special. Holy mackerel is it worth the calories. In the kitchen is Chef Amanda Webster, previously of Primal Pantry, so there’s plenty of experience in catering for dietary requirements and creating healthy but delicious feeds there. There are also plans to launch an evening tapas menu in the future, which we’ll be holding our breath for. let minnow 4In the meantime, make sure you stop in for brunch at the new squid on the block and Let Minnow what you think. You’ll find the café at 57 Park Avenue, Clayfield, open Tuesday to Sunday. Words by Ranyhyn Akui Photos by Victoria Finnerty
