Brisbane has enough winning food and booze to feed a million food babies, so sometimes it’s easy to forget that there are some things worth heading south for.
One of those things is Kiyomi, the newest venture by chef Chase Kojima. The modern Japanese restaurant is part of a schmancy new development at Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast (we hear there’s a new pool, too, but bikini bodies were the last things on our mind).
Kiyomi’s two page menu is divided according to Japanese dish-types like izakaya and binchotan but what appears on your plate might be a little less straight-forward – foie gras sushi, anyone? The practically-obligatory tempura list includes Moreton Bay bugs with grapefruit, sambal and vinegar, and when it comes to dessert it’s near-impossible to go past the Goma Street, black sesame ice cream and sesame candy with caramelized white chocolate sandwiched between sheets of tempered dark chocolate so glossy you can almost see your reflection. If you’re one of the appetite-less people who waits long enough to check.
Born and raised in San Francisco with Japanese parents (there’s a California roll joke there somewhere, but we’re still too full to think about it), Chase has worked his way across the world from Dubai to London, Vegas to Sydney, and is known for twisting his Japanese cooking style with the flavours of wherever he happens to find himself. Our favourite result of this mish-mash of cuisines is the Hiramasa Kingfish miso ceviche topped with super-finely shredded, crispy potato (practically fish and chips, but better) and the Queensland Roll of spanner crab, soy paper and avocado isn’t far behind.
Top this off with brilliant cocktails (the Chasing Kiyomi is the signature, but the zesty Uma was our pick) and seriously cool fit out complete with gleaming timber and an eye-watering neon mural, and you’ve got something we might keep sneaking across city lines for.
Kiyomi is open for dinner from 5.30pm Tuesday to Sunday and you’ll find it at Jupiter’s Casino in Broadbeach.
