Frittering around: Brisbane’s best fritters

Carb loaded? Check. Fried to golden perfection? Check. Getting your veggies in? Also check. Fritters are like the ultimate breakfast, combining everything you need on a Sunday morning (including bacon), into one glorious stack of crisp, floury deliciousness. They’re also quite the chameleon of the breakfast world – corn, zucchini, pumpkin, apple, you name it, you can put it in a fritter. Some might have a favourite, but we think all fritters are worth skipping pancakes for. After frittering away a few mornings eating our way through Brisbane’s fritter piles, we’ve put together a list of the best. The Jam Pantry | Greenslopes Corn fritters, American vibed sweet potato fritters complete with toasted marshmallows and fritters to dip in cheesy eggs – The Jam Pantry has done it all. Everchanging but always on the board in some form, these savoury pancakes have a cult following, and each new creation is an excuse to head to the café for breakfast. Stop frittering your brunch opportunities away and go and find out what’s on the menu this week – we’ve heard it involves zucchini and feta fritters with lamb shoulder, pomegranate and fried egg. Au Cirque | New Farm Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, Au Cirque’s sweet corn fritters are bacon us crazy. Piled with smashed avocado and tomato salsa (and bacon, if you want, which of course you do), these fritters are everything you want in a breakfast – and then some. Paddington Deli & Epicerie | Paddington Thought being gluten intolerant meant you missed out on the carb-filled deliciousness that is corn fritter? Think again! Paddington Deli’s sweet stack is gluten free, and will stay that way forever if their brunch loving regulars have anything to do with it! Pear Café | Highgate Hill If you’re on the pear-suit of breakfast happiness, Pear Café’s corn fritters are delicious beyond com-pear. With smashed avocado, relish and a perfectly poached egg precariously balanced on top, these a-maize-ing little morsels are a yolk porn stars dream. Chapter IV | Paddington There’s nothing corny about Chapter IV’s fritter stack. No really, these bad boys are all sweet potato and zucchini, fried to golden, crispy perfection and piled with avocado and tomato salsa. Bonus, you can get them right up until 3pm. Habitat | West End You don’t make friends with kale, but you’ll make besties with Habitat’s kale and zucchini Little Critter Fritters. Adorned with red pepper jam, rocket, and dollops of pumpkin mousse, they’re both a twist on the classic and a tasty substitute for pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. The Racing Café | Hendra Not one, but TWO delicious fritters piles have found their way onto The Racing Café’s menu. Make the difficult choice between pumpkin and zucchini with feta and poached egg or sweet potato and corn with avocado and sour cream (our fave) and then take it to the next level with a side of bacon. You know you want to. The Rabbit Hole Cafe | Seven Hill A corn and coriander stack of epic proportions, Rabbit Hole’s fritters are a corn-coction worth trying. Served up with crispy bacon (hallelujah!), avocado, and roasted tomatoes, seeing this arrive in front of you will make you very hoppy. My Mistress | Clayfield They might not be as naughty as an affair with Monica Lewinsky, but you’ll certainly want to keep My Mistress’s Eggs Monica a secret from your neighbours – so you can be assured of always getting a table at the cozy café. Corn, zucchini and haloumi fritters come with blistered cherry tomatoes, more haloumi, smashed avo, and a fried egg. They had us at haloumi. The Rare Pear | Holland Park A breakfast institution known only by southside locals (and a few northsiders who care to venture down), The Rare Pear’s specialty lies in reinventing old classics. Their sweet potato and haloumi fritters are loaded with poached eggs, beetroot hummus, asparagus, roasted cherry tomatoes, dukkah, and herbed crème fraiche. Phwoah! Billy Kart Kitchen | West End The crispy corn fritters from Billy Kart Kitchen are something else. If you’re feeling indulgent (which we always are), we suggest you add a side of bacon – or maybe two. Served up with grilled avocado and heirloom tomatoes, the fritter stack from Ben O’Donoghue’s kitchen will have you singing praise to the maize. Stacks on! Words by Kim Hellberg
