Elevated pub food: our top picks

Pub dining just got interesting.

We love a humble pub feed just as much as the next guy. There are, however, some pretty epic spots gaining traction around Bris-Vegas for elevating pub fare to another level and we’re so here for it.

Hotel Carrington | Fortitude Valley

New kid on the block Hotel Carrington is the Valley’s hottest new watering hole, and is also establishing itself as quite the foodie spot. Built over a century ago, the building itself is now a refurbished, fresh venue that pays homage to the past with gorgeous pressed metal ceilings, exposed brick and polished concrete. Hotel Carrington specialises in “feel-good food,” combining all your pub classics like steaks and pizzas with an exciting mix of modern Australian and global flavours. The smokehouse menu items are unmissable, brought to life using a specialty Red Dirt smoker to enhance flavours and cook proteins to perfection.

The Boundary Hotel | West End

The Boundary Hotel is a local hero within the West End community, and it’s not hard to see why. This place screams character, charm and just a darn good time. Head to the backyard and you’ll find an amazing bistro menu full of Aussie classics, Asian-inspired bites and wood-fired pizzas. From burgers and steaks to antipasti and gourmet salads, this ever-popular spot has something to please every palate.

Little Big House | South Bank

If you didn’t know that we absolutely adore Little Big House, you must be new here. We once said that Little Big House is like the physical embodiment of that one mate you know that always throws the best parties, and we stick by that statement. They also know how to dish up a pretty great pub feed with that special touch. Start your foodie party with a snacking plate overflowing with salumi, artisan cheese, pickles and bread, before you dig into one of their classic mains – we strongly recommend their famous chicken parmy. The food at Little Big House is literally elevated – with the multi-story Queenslander sitting high above South Bank on stilts, serving good food, good vibes and good times!

Regatta Hotel | Toowong

The Regatta is an integral part of the Brisbane pub scene and has seen a lot in its time. The hotel has been pouring beers and serving up delicious pub fare to the good people of Brissy for 145 years, and they’re not stopping any time soon. The whopping venue has seven different bars for a drink and four different spots for a meal, including the Main Bar for a classic feed, the Courtyard for share plates in the sun and the River Road Café for breaky, lunch and dinner. For an elevated dining experience, The Boatshed offers an extensive menu with a focus on dry and wet aged steaks paired with fine wines.

Hope & Anchor | Paddington

Hope & Anchor combines British-style pub food with crafty cocktails and a comprehensive wine list. The succinct menu of English eats spans from small plates to big plates and a range of burgers and sandwiches including an iconic fish finger sandwich. Wrap your lips around the Cape Grim eye fillet carpaccio or a farmhouse terrine with chicken and black pudding to start, before you dig into one of the many proteins on offer for main.

Welcome to Bowen Hills | Bowen Hills

What comes to mind when you hear built-in pizza joint, permanent burger truck, daily foodie specials and rotating food trucks? If your answer is Welcome to Bowen Hills, you’re a winner. This ever-popular spot has a variety of tasty eats on offer and an abundance of chilled out vibes to match. Sit back, relax and dig into 50c chicken wings with a craft beer in hand and watch the world go by.

If you’re in the mood for food, Brisbane’s vast range of elevated pub fare has you more than covered – because when modern, fresh flavours from around the world meet Brissy’s best pub kitchens, something delicious is always born.
