Chasing Summer: G&G Guide to Craft Breweries

We love a tallie of VB or crushing a XXXX tinnie as much as the next person, but with summer around the corner and peak beer drinking season quickly approaching – it’s time to start doing our homework and deciding which brews we’ll be sinking watching the sunset.

With Queensland Beer Week approaching, and our craft brewery scene booming, we’re happy to get #summerready. We’ve rounded up the regional breweries we don’t mind going the distance for.

ALL IN BREWING CO | BANYO

With rotating food trucks from some of Brisbane’s favourites including Bone Lorry, Carolina Kitchen and Mac From Way Back, as well as live music and trivia on Thursdays – All Inn Brewing Co is exactly that. You won’t catch these lager loathing brewers slinging any ‘fizzy formulaic lagers’ from their Banyo quarters either – ale aficionados only. From the burnt orange ambler ale ‘Ruby’ to the fruity ‘Penny’ pale ale – their ales are as full flavoured as their makers are sassy.

BALTER BREWING CO | CURRUMBIN

What happens when six Australians and an American combine forces? Balter. The Gold Coast brewery is as well known for its packaging as it for its crisp, full flavoured range of beers. With four beers on the menu, from a refreshing, hoppy IPA (drinking this bad boy is likened to frolicking naked through a spring forest – we’ll take it) to a smooth, malty Alt Brown Ale. The brewery itself open Friday – Sunday with food trucks, artwork by Frank and Mimi and good vibes. You’ll be throwing up shakkas in no time.

YOUR MATES BREWING CO | NAMBOUR

Good mates, good beers, good times – the boys at Your Mates Brewing Co have got it sorted. From humble beginnings as housemates in Moffat Beach with nothing more than a healthy appreciation for beer and a dream of brewing their own, the boys have now found themselves the proud owners of a bar. They’re serving their beer, their way – and people cannot get enough. Choose from their pale ale ‘Larry’ or his darker mate, ‘Donnie’ dark ale.

MOFFAT BEACH BREWING | CALOUNDRA

They’ve come a long way from brewing out of their shed – the team from Moffat Beach are knocking our socks off, as well as the tops off a few cold ones. Located just meters from the beach, the little brewery that could serve up six rotating beers, a killer menu and great vibes.

SCENIC RIM BREWING | MOUNT ALFORD

Located in a heritage-listed former general store, in a quaint sleepy town – Scenic Rim Brewing is bursting with old-world charm, and damn good brews. Brewing on site, Scenic Rim has five beers and a cider on tap including the Digga’s Pale Ale and Fat Man Maroon Ale.

FORTITUDE BREWING | MOUNT TAMBORINE

Born from a win at the races, located on a mountain and brewing under two labels: Fortitude and Noisy Minor, the beers from Fortitude Brewing are as complex as they are delicious. Fortitude focuses on session beers, whereas Noisy Minor is the sassy sibling, known for its IPAs and red ales.

STONE & WOOD BREWING CO | BYRON BAY

Darlings of the craft beer movement Stone & Wood have been the heart of Byron for nearly ten years. After outgrowing their original brewery, the crew have moved most of their production to Murwillumbah, but the original remains as the spiritual home of Stone and Wood. Now the home of their limited release beers, as well as events and fundraisers – the Byron location is still welcome to enthusiasts keen for a tasting. With three core beers and rotating seasonal beers, Stone & Wood have a beer for every occasion.

Whether your heart says ale, lager or stout – craft brewers know what you’re about.
