After acquiring a taste for cocktails during our Centrelink years, we couldn’t help but wonder… is it appropriate to start our morning with an espresso martini instead of a passionless espresso, and if so, where the heck can we get our hands on some?
Yes, our cocktail-loving, grown-ass children, a number of Brisbane-based venues are shaking up breakfast juice with a little somethin’ somethin’, resulting in breakfast cocktail menus offering everything from mimosas to G & T kombucha.
Drink in everything that’s sip-worthy below.
X Cargo | Fortitude Valley
In case y’all weren’t aware, X Cargo collaborates with Yum Yum Breakfast Buns every Wednesday through Sunday! After tucking into a Belgian waffle sandwich with American cheese, maple bacon, fried egg and maple syrup (my god), wait ’til 10am to have your juice and booze it up too.
Creating a breakfast cocktail starts with your choice of juice (up to three flavours), an add on (let’s say whey), and one of five different alcoholic selections (it’s a yes to vodka from us)! X Cargo might look completely different during the day, but you might just end up looking like you did the night before.
Pourboy | South Brisbane
Pour me another, my good man. Waking up to espresso martinis and Cocchi spritzes at 10am isn’t the worst way to start one’s morning, especially when a croque madam and potato blue cheese hash are also on the cards. Pourboy, great choice.
Blockhouse | Nundah
That plane from The Incredibles asking old mate if he’d like “more mimosas?” is a big mood. Blockhouse’s Hair of the Dog menu is everything you’d hope it would be, as you gaze out over Nundah’s tequila sunrise, kickstart the morn with fruit punch, or of course, more MIMOSAS! Don’t forget a serve of okonomiyaki while you’re at it.
The Moray Café | New Farm
Gimme Moray. The Moray Café’s breakfast cocktails menu features crisp classics plus the Moray-Moray-Tini – fresh pressed apple, pineapple, mint and vodka. The real kicker is bottomless mimosas for $20, or two bloody Marys for the same price (we mean, we’ve definitely made our choice)! Stay in theme and get the piña colada waffles as an extra treat!
Hyde Away Café | Yeronga
Kombucha? Only if it’s Hyde Away’s G & T watermelon or pineapple kombucha with cucumber ribbon and blueberries (we’re not fussy at all). In between tasting your way through bellinis, Aperol spritzes and spiced ginger cocktails, take a minute to get stuck into breakfast gnocchi, chilli scramble or a good old smashed avo. Yeronga was the right choice.
Kettle & Tin | Paddington
Kettle & Bloody Marys is what we’re after, and exactly what’s up for grabs at this Paddington favourite. Back up a Mary with bourbon butter shakes and beetroot Negronis while your order of a brisket benny, karaage waffles and Milo panna cotta with Baileys cream is up and cooking.
Canvas | Woolloongabba
Woolloongabba’s signature cocktail house does brunch on weekends, and you need to give it a crack! Come for the baked eggs with beef brisket chilli con carne, and stay for the breakfast martini with gin, lemon, triple sec and house-made rhubarb marmalade and the Captain Crunch with rum, apple, lime and Weet-Bix syrup. Let’s yeet this Weet-Bix.
Good morning, and good post-breakfast nap.
