Brisbane’s Best Whiskey Bars

Along with all but adopting American food as our own, Brisbane seems to have taken up a few of their drinking habits as well.

Move over vodka and gin, because whiskey is the new spirit of the hour, with plenty of bars on every side of town stocked to the rafters with liquid gold.

If you’re a member of the hordes of drinkers switching to the dark side to better match your dinner of wings and ribs, we’ve got a round up of the best places to get your discerning drink on.

The Gresham | CBD

The Gresham is a fitting place to curl up your whiskers and don a fob watch before getting delightfully sozzled on a few post-work whiskeys. They do have an equally impressive collection of rums, tequilas, wines and beers, but the whiskey is what will have you crawling back.

Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall | Paddington

Down for a rootin’ tootin’ good time? Lefty’s has you covered every weekend with toe tapping live music, rave worthy eats and plenty of smooth liquid cheer. Their signature drink is a specialty whiskey with, wait for it, freshly squeezed apple juice, and it goes down spectacularly with one of their hefty cheeseburgers. Do not order extra fries (or do, frankly we’d be impressed).

Cobbler + Death & Taxes | West End + CBD

Owned by the same stellar team, both Cobbler and Death & Taxes boast an array of the hard stuff that could win records, with over 400 whiskeys from the likes of Scotland, India, America, Japan and China on their shelves. Their genius bartenders whip up some pretty spesh cocktails but if you’d like to get personally acquainted with your booze, head along to one of Cobbler’s frequent whiskey masterclass events (hit up the Facebook page to keep up to date).

Malt | CBD

Malt. The very name conjures up images of crystal tumblers filled with clinking ice and amber nectar. Their endless page offerings of whiskeys, mouthwatering cocktails and bar food to match lives up to the distinguished name, with everything from the familiar Maker’s Mark to a 31 year old Glendronach. No sticky wings on this menu, but you will find some of the most elite and mouth watering foods around with the likes of seared scallops and Korean style pork belly.

CIRCA 27 WHISKEY & COCKTAIL BAR | WOOLLOONGABBA

Tucked away in The Morrison (so you can fill up on cob loaf and BBQ wings before you hit the hard stuff), Circa 27’s collection of exceptional whiskeys are made to be savoured and appreciated, no mixer needed. Named after the year it was built when prohibition was scrapped in 1927, their olden-style bar transports you to another time. They also boast a delectable range of 20th century inspired cocktails with a twist, because why wouldn’t you?

Of course, you could hit up a top whiskey bar in Brisbane and stick to beer, but it’s whiskey.
