Where to shell out for Brisbane's best mussels

The only type of flexing we'll accept...

Whether they’re with fragrant Italian herbs, juicy and cider-soaked, or covered in Asian flavours, mussels are a cross-cultural delight that we’ll hoe into in all seasons. Just add bread!

Bar Alto | New Farm

River views, Italian nibbles, and pots of Italian-style mussels in chilli, garlic and tomato? Heaven! This New Farm institution is known for its Cozze dish, which has stayed on the menu across seasons and years. Pair ’em with a crisp Italian white wine and you are guaranteed a good time.

Alba Bar & Deli | CBD

The Spaniards know how to do mussels, and Alba’s inspired version with morcilla sausage, apera and broth is a lively, fragrant take! Does it get better than juicy mussels paired with a Cava? We think not…

Rico Bar & Dining | CBD

Something about Eagle Street Pier gets us hungry for seafood, and the oysters, seafood paella, and kilos of olla de mejillones with cherry tomato, garlic, chilli and Spanish apple cider, served with toasted bread, well and truly do the job.

Billykart | West End

What’s better than mussels with bread? Mussels with CHEESY bread! Billykart’s beer and chilli mussels in herbs and Napoli sauce are served with cheesy toast which, frankly, just improves on perfection.

St James Crabhouse | Hamilton

Choices, choices… At this seafood hotspot, you can dive into a one-kilo pot of mussels in your choice of sauces; options include Cajun prawn jus, Singaporean chilli, Tellicherry peppercorn, Newport marinara and lemon thyme butter so there is, literally, something for every mussel lover!

Coppa Spuntino | CBD

While they’re known for their gnocchi and frozen cocktails, the mussels in a tomato and nduja-spiced broth at Coppa should be on your must-try list! Move on to the squid ink risotto with squid, sherry and bottarga afterwards for the ultimate multi-course Italian seafood experience.

Now, when is a bib appropriate attire?
