Where to find Brisbane’s best Mexican food

Holy guacamole, indeed.

Whether you’re a fan of cheesy Tex-Mex or you’re still reminiscing about that night in Tulum, Brissy’s mixing pot of Mexican eats has it all.

BAJA | FORTITUDE VALLEY

Unique yet authentic, Baja offers Mexican flavours in ways you’ve probably never encountered before. Unless, of course, you frequent northern Mexico. Baja prides itself on its menu of fresh and clean food that is thoughtfully prepared with skill and passion. The result? A perfect feed every time.

EL PLANTA | SOUTH BRISBANE

Plant-based Mexican innovation. Sounds pretty fun, doesn’t it!? El Planta is dishing up some insanely tasty vegan tacos and Mexican street food in the heart of Fish Lane. Catch us ordering tacos de al pastor and frijole con puerco (with slow-braised jackfruit instead of pork), and a spiked grilled pineapple agua fresca.

PEPE’S | NEWMARKET

Did somebody say chimichanga? This old-school Mexican joint has everything from tamales to oreo tacos, boasting a three-course set menu that the fam will love. Whatever your favourite Mexican dish is, you can probably find it on Pepe’s menu, lathered in cheese. It’s a “si, Pepe” from us.

LA PATRONA | TENERIFFE
Shining a spotlight on traditional Mexican cuisine, La Patrona offers diners an honest dining experience inspired by owner Rebeca Flores’ hometown of Baijo. The menu starts light with street eats like ceviche, chicken wings, and char-grilled corn, before tasty enchiladas and al pastor-style tacos washed down with Mexican beers, wines, and tequila. Taking over the previous home of Sourced on Florence Street, this Teneriffe beauty is bright, bubbly, and downright delicious.
MAYA  | FORTITUDE VALLEY

Strutting onto the scene in July and transforming Eleven Rooftop Bar into an authentic Mexican joint, MAYA Mexican is all about food, booze, and views. Taking traditional Mexican dishes and elevating them (pun intended) into 2020, MAYA’s dishes are a contemporary rendition of Mexican street food, with heavy influences from the coastal Pacific, Yucatan and Sonoran.

EL CAMINO CANTINA | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

If colourful chaos complemented by fresh, char-grilled fajitas and a few frozen margaritas sounds like the best Tex-Mex experience in Brisbane, then you’ll want to become amigos with the loco folks at El Camino Cantina. With weekday happy hour specials and sombreros for all, they’re always in the mood for a fiesta.

MAMA TACO | WEST END

Tequila lovers, assemble. A contemporary Mexican taqueria and mezcaleria, Mama Taco knows how to drive flavour into everything they serve. The menu of tacos, larger plates, sides, and desserts is rustic and bold, while the drinks list tells the tale of a very fun night. We’ll take another mezcal negroni, please.

LA QUINTA | BULIMBA

Be sure to peruse the chilli meter on the front page of the La Quinta menu before making your choice, with heat ranging from ‘a little bite’ to ‘extreme’. Eek. When we hit up La Quinta, we always order the LQ tortilla salad bowl so we can have our bowl and eat it too.

COMUNA CANTINA | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Fire up your tastebuds with the flavours of Latin street food as you munch on tacos, quesadillas, nachos and arepas. Be sure to head there before dry July kicks off… Comuna Cantina’s cocktail list is something to behold.

MUCHO MEXICANO  | SOUTHBANK & HAWTHORNE

Voted Brisbane’s best Mexican, Mucho Mexicano brings a modern twist to your favourite flavours. With locations in South Bank and Hawthorne, daily deals are on offer including Margarita Monday, Taco Tuesday, Nacho Wednesday and Thirsty Thursdays. We all love a thirsty Thursday. With menu highlights including jalapeño poppers, pulled pork tacos and kingfish ceviche on the menu, you’ll be coming back mucho times.

MISS MEXICANA | WYNNUM

Inspired by Frida Kahlo, Miss Mexicana pays homage to the bright and colourful artwork of the famous artist. As Brisbane’s newest, offering of Mexican cuisine, Miss M has everything you need to satisfy that spicy craving. From classic margs to chicken enchiladas, all the bases are covered and then some. Our eyes are on their infamous Michelada, concoction of clamato, Tabasco and salsa de Tamarindo. A Mexican Bloody Mary if you will. Count us in!

EL CAMINO CANTINA | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

With two new locations on the Gold Coast (Robina & Surfers Paradise), El Camino is taking over as the go to spot for the funnest Mexican night out you’ll ever have.

CALIFORNIA NATIVE | COORPAROO

Bringing Brisbane’s best Mexican food to the suburbs, California Native is a casual eatery with plenty of flavour. Inspired by the west coast’s take on the cuisine, the ambience  makes for a delightful experience, which can only be enhanced by the food. And don’t forget about the margs, a speciality of California Native. Braised beef tacos, sizzling black fajitas and chicken taquitos are all on offer, and if that’s not enough, the tequila sherbet cocktail will have you lining up immediately.

CARTEL DEL TACO | HAWTHORNE

As Brisbane’s first authentic Mexican street taqueria, Cartel Del Taco is Hawthorne’s latest obsession. Inspired by traditional flavours and an 80’s aesthetic, Del Taco uses a range of local and imported ingredients to bring the vibrancy of Mexico City to our doorstep. With authentic guacamole, deep fried quesadillas and octopus tostadas on the menu, there’s plenty of options, with the birria tacos and the beef cheeks with salsa verde on the top of our list to try. And don’t worry, Cartel Del Taco has got you covered for drinks. From the Martinez martini to the Busting My Mandarins, we know exactly where we’re heading for happy hour.

We don’t know about you, but we always have a Mexican restaurant in Brisbane on speed dial in queso emergency…
