Brisbane's best Japanese feeds

A shout-out to Japan for bringing us some of the most delicious things in life – sushi, gyoza, tempura...the list could go on!

Luckily for us, we don’t have to leave our beloved Brissy to get a taste of Japan, as some of the finest Japanese fare is right on our doorstep.

Whether it’s sake that you’re after or you’ve got a yearning for yakitori, here’s our round up of the best places to get your Japanese fix in Brissy…

Honto | FORTITUDE VALLEY

Agnes and sAme sAme’s Japanese sister venue Honto is one not to be missed. It is a unique dining experience, offering up a menu of contemporary Japanese cuisine with a modern Australian twist, along with specialty cocktails and a curated selection of Japanese whiskys. You can expect top-notch quality including insanely fresh oysters and sashimi from their signature raw menu, plus more substantial bites from their entree and main menus.

Sono | HAMILTON

Take one look at Sono’s sensational sushi menu and you’ll never be able to go back to chicken ‘n’ avo nigiri! The sophisticated menu and stunning riverside location at Portside Wharf make it an unforgettable dining experience, with the option of teppanyaki or a la carte dining. The hardest part will be choosing what to order from their extensive menu, featuring a range of incredibly fresh sashimi, sushi rolls, and main dishes. If you’re spoilt for choice, we recommend going for one of the tasting course menus, where you can get a taste of all the menu favourites.

Motto Motto | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Motto motto translates to ‘more, more’, and that’s exactly what you’ll be wanting after a feed at this Japanese eatery. If you find yourself having a shopping sesh in Chermside, Carindale or Indooroopilly, head to Motto Motto for the perfect pre-shop fuel or post-shop recovery. They’re serving up hearty Japanese favourites including a selection of rice bowls, ramen, udon, and their signature ‘cloud rolls’, which is a super soft baguette style bun loaded with your choice of karaage chicken, teriyaki chicken, wagyu beef or salmon.

Yuzu and Co | MILTON

Relaxed dining hotspot Yuzu & Co consistently delivers an amazing Japanese feed. Their extensive menu has every Japanese fanatic covered, featuring all of the classics such as your California roll and pork gyoza, along with more sophisticated dishes from the Chef’s Signature menu. We love the sound of their sashimi tacos, with crispy nori taco shells, salmon, tuna, kingfish, snapper and tomato salsa. There’s nothing fishy about that!

Yoko | CBD

If you’re after impeccable views and food to match, Yoko is your place. Located at the stunning Howard Smith Wharves precinct, the venue is an experience in itself, with a menu to match. Yoko is home to some of Brisbane’s finest Japanese fare, featuring fresh sashimi, oysters, and a range of izakaya style dishes, ideal for sharing with friends. We recommend trying out their miso-glazed eggplant, followed by a serve of their unique Japanese spicy bolognese. Bonus points if you pair it with their signature slushy cocktail!

Shunsai | EAST BRISBANE

If you’re after Japanese food that will make you feel like you’ve stepped off a plane into Japan, Shunsai is your jam. They’re offering up some of the most authentic Japanese fare in town, with a focus on using the freshest seasonal ingredients available. For the full experience, opt for one of their set menus such as the kaiseki, which incorporates sushi, tempura, sushi and other individual dishes.

Sake | CBD

For your own sake, head to Sake and indulge in some divine Japanese cuisine with a view to match. Situated in the picturesque Eagle St Pier dining precinct, take in the gorgeous waterfront view whilst feasting on a menu of contemporary Japanese eats and selection of cocktails. They’re known for their fresh sashimi and range of signature sushi rolls, including the Kingfish Double Crunch Roll with jalapeno mayonnaise, coriander and cucumber. Why not top it off with the Japanese Rose cocktail, with vodka, peach, lychee petal and pressed lime?

Kabuki Teppanyaki | CBD

Who doesn’t love dinner and a show? We do, especially when the show involves delicious food…Kabuki is the place to go for a traditional teppanyaki experience, giving you the chance to watch your fried rice go flying across the room before you devour it. Or if you’re after a more casual bite, Kabuki has you covered with their range of grab ‘n’ go sushi rolls, poke bowls and soba salads.

Hikari | TENERIFFE

Say hi to Hikari, where you can find top-notch contemporary Japanese cuisine in a laid-back setting. There’s something for everyone on the menu, with a range of classics like Japanese curries, bento boxes, fresh sashimi, and a range of share-style main dishes. With so much choice on the menu, we recommend ordering a selection of their side dishes, such as the Holy Soft Shell Crab, with deep fried soft shell crab, avo and spicy mayo. Wash it all down with a Japanese beer or sake, of course!

So that’s our round-up…seaweed you later!
