Brisbane's best fish and chips

Why not let someone else stand over the deep fryer and go get your mitts on Brisbane’s best fish and chips. We’ve done the hard work of sorting out the soggy battered hale from the crisp, crumbed barramundi so all you need to do is grab the tomato sauce and take your paper package of goodness outside to eat on the veranda.
The Fishery | Milton
Not only is this local fave always ready and waiting for all your fishy needs, but they also have a selection of fresh Australian seafood big enough to please the fussiest of fish eaters. Or take the weekend off and treat the whole family to one of their very sizable seafood packs!
The Kingfisher | Toowong
This crown jewel of a fish and chip shop has built its success with the locals of Toowong, and now attracts diners Brisbane-wide with perfectly golden chips and a new breakfast menu. Our fave package? Juicy pacific dory grilled to a t, with a generous pile of hot chips and tender haloumi cheese. Yum. And before you question it, yes, you can have seafood for breakfast. Ever heard of smoked salmon?
Carraway Pier Fish & Chips | Kelvin Grove
Our friends at Carraway claim they stick to the basics – but their humbleness can’t distract us from just how mind blowing their generous dishes are. If you can resist chomping your way through locally renowned burgers you’ll be delightfully surprised by the value and quality of Carraway fish. Oh. My. Cod. Fishy flesh is doused with light and fluffy batter, cooked to crisp perfection and lain on a bed of crunchy chips. It is the cure to even the crabbiest day.
A Salt and Battery | St Lucia
The hot flaky fish served up at A Salt and Battery is to dine for. The regulars might head in for locally sourced trout and lightly battered barramundi but for us and our inner gourmand it has to be the great ‘A Salt and Battery Cold Seafood Platter’ – prawns, oysters, crab and Moreton Bay bugs, paired with an old school root beer to wash it all down – we’re hooked.
The Fishmonger’s Wife | Hawthorne
From the French beer batter to the Japanese crumb, The Fishmonger’s Wife has mastered the art of the humble fish and chip plate. It’s no wonder they were awarded Australia’s best fish and chips in both 2008 and 2009 (not that they’re boasting). Their menu is a world of original recipes that may bombard you but you can’t go wrong with their pesto crumbed barramundi or sweet Teriyaki grilled salmon. Delish.
Marine World Seafood | Tingalpa
When you come to Marine World Seafood, the world is your oyster. Well, kind of. Their oysters will rock your world (close enough). Their fresh oysters and prawns are a refreshing alternative to the old time favourite battered fish and chips. But whatever you decide to try, make sure you have room for a couple of dishes – your choice of seafood is enormous. And nobody, nobody, leaves this joint without downing a delicious grilled fish burger. Don’t let yourself be battered by bad fish and chips. Words by Julia Hulbert
