The perfect snack to cradle in one hand with a cold bev in the other, bug, prawn and lobster rolls are a decadent-yet-simple nibble that we find absolutely irresistible.
From bougie iterations on pillowy brioche to DIY waterside experiences, here’s the low-down on where to shell out for Brisbane’s (and a surrounding beach’s…) best seafood rolls.
The Boundary Hotel | West End
This funky suburban pub punches up with its menu, which features a mod prawn roll with bang bang king prawns, iceberg lettuce and glistening tobiko on a milk bun. Settle in under a candy pink umbrella in the backyard, and you could almost believe you’re in the Hamptons (almost…).
Motto Motto | Various
They might only be available for a few weeks, so the bargain $16 Moreton Bay bug rolls from Motto Motto are well worth trying! Filled with Atlantic lobster, shallots, creamy yuzu dressing, avo and black roe, this bad boy is a creamy, dreamy must-try (while it lasts)! Grab it from any of their four Brissie locations.
The Fish Shoppe | Bowen Hills
By the team behind Kangaroo Point’s One Fish Two Fish, this King Street pop-up (for summer only!) is serving up classic and fancy seafood dishes. Our peepers are on their lobster roll with brown butter and saffron mayo, available from 4pm Thursday-Saturdays. Best paired with a watermelon spritz!
Rick Shores | Burleigh Heads
It would be remiss not to mention the iconic bug rolls at this seaside hotspot! Well worth the trip from Brissie, Rick’s version is loaded with Moreton Bay bug, sriracha, bug mayo and gem lettuce for crunch.
Rico | CBD
The signature item on Rico’s tapas menu, their bug brioche gets by with a little help from its friends, including a lime and chilli aioli and crispy lettuce. Pair it with a fresh cocktail or sangria and you’re swimming through summer days!
King Crab Co | Bulimba
Of course, this cute suburban crab shack serves up the goods! Grab their KCCo lobster and crab slider for a roll loaded with seafood with Kewpie mayo, celery and Old Bay seasoning, topped with potato crisps and a side of shoestring fries with truffle oil and grana Padano cheese—a tasty mouthful. Looking to go a little more refined? Their soft-shell crab roll has your name written all over it (in wasabi mayo, no less).
The Prawnster | Kangaroo Point
Ok, they might not serve a prawn roll per se, but they do serve some of the freshest and plumpest prawns in town, and invite you to bring the rolls, salads, and sauces of your dreams to make your perfect bite!
Felons Barrel Hall | CBD
The fun-packed to the Felons family has a banging menu to suit their brews, with a cute seafood slider worth sinking this season! This li’l cutie comes with lettuce and spicy mayo.
