Blurring the boundaries between art and play, Swingers reimagines mini golf as a surreal, interactive experience. Visitors can putt their way through nine artist-designed holes that are as thought-provoking as they are fun, featuring candy-coloured sculptures, latex tail putters and square golf balls that challenge the very rules of the game.
The exhibition features six visionary female artists: Miranda July (USA), Kaylene Whiskey (AUS), Saeborg (JPN), Nabilah Nordin (AUS), Delaine Le Bas (UK) and Natasha Tontey (ID). Together, they create a kaleidoscopic world that celebrates fun, humour and creativity.
Originally developed by Melbourne’s RISING festival and curated by Grace Herbert, Swingers draws inspiration from the radical origins of mini golf. The game was first created by nineteenth-century Scottish women who were banned from ‘real’ golf courses, transforming exclusion into an act of creativity and rebellion.
The Queensland premiere also marks a significant moment for Brisbane Powerhouse’s new CEO and Artistic Director, Louise Bezzina, who stepped into the role in October. “Swingers perfectly embodies what I want to champion at Brisbane Powerhouse: experiences that are daring, participatory and deeply creative,” she said.
Celebrated by Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner as an example of Brisbane’s growing reputation as Australia’s lifestyle capital, Swingers — The Art of Mini Golf promises to delight art lovers, families and curious minds alike. Whether you are here for the putt or the play, it is set to be one of Brisbane’s most imaginative exhibitions of the summer.
