Brisbane Festival 2025: Where First Nation Stories take center stage

This September, Brisbane Festival invites you to immerse yourself in a celebration of First Nations programs, showcasing cultural storytelling, music, dance and spectacular visual experiences.

Leading the charge is Baleen Moondjan, from 18th September to 21st September. A breathtaking outdoor ceremony by Stephen Page, inspired by a story from his grandmother, this performance beautifully honours whale songlines and the totemic system of Ngugi/Nunkul/Moondjan people of Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island).

The skies of Brisbane will also come alive with Skylore: Nieergoo; Spirit of the Whales from 25th September to 27th September, as hundreds of drones retell Yuggera and Toorbul creation stories in lights and motion.

Quandamooka Festival invites visitors for a full cultural immersion on the shores of Minjerribah for 13th September to 14th September, think, weaving workshops, live music, traditional food, First Nations short films, corroborees and bush tucker and all this against the island’s beautiful backdrop, all celebrating the culture of the Nughi, Nunukul and Goenpul clans.

Audiences can also catch Preparing Ground between 5th September to 7th September for an evocative dance work crafted over six years and Unveiling Shadows between 10th September to 13th September for a fearless debut blending hip-hop, vogue and theatre to tell a deeply personal First Nation story by Joshua Taliani.

And if you think that’s all: think again! The list of First Nation experiences goes on, each unfolding a story waiting thousands of years for you to be discovered. So, whether you are a regular festivalgoer or new to this scene, this year’s First Nation program is an invitation for you to witness the stories that have lived on country for thousands of years, so Book Now!
