Best of Brisbane’s cinemas: what to watch this weekend (and where)

Sometimes you just have to say, “Sorry Netflix, I am actually no longer watching!”

Streaming is convenient, but cinemas are still the best way to see films the way they were intended to be consumed, and with so many great movies out this weekend, why not plan your next theatrical journey accordingly?

THE LITTLE MERMAID at Reading Cinemas, Newmarket | Newmarket Village

Be part of Ariel’s world as the classic Disney animated tale comes to life on the big screen. Out from “Under the Sea” and onto one of Brisbane’s biggest and best screens – the Titan Luxe – this is the ultimate way to watch Halle Bailey’s luminous take on everyone’s favourite Little Mermaid. With 360 degree immersive sound, a massive 23 metre screen, reclining chairs and dine-in options, there’ll be no “Poor, Unfortunate Souls” here, just happy faces!

MAYBE I DO at Palace Cinemas | The Barracks and James Street, Fortitude Valley

There are some movies that don’t need the bells and whistles of surround sound or the biggest screen available. Sometimes, you just need a little sophistication and a more sensible audience mentality – something Palace Cinemas delivers in spades. Whether it’s at the Palace Barracks or in the bustling metropolis of James Street, Palace offers lush food and wine options and the most delectable of ice creams (Connoisseur Belgian Chocolate, anyone?) which are perfect to accompany sessions of Maybe I Do, a mature romantic dramedy starring Diane Keaton, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and William H. Macy.

RENFIELD at New Farm Cinemas | New Farm

The classic New Farm Cinemas, a staple of the Brisbane cinema scene, have retained their cool, retro aesthetic as they continually usher in new waves of cinema auteurs. Only here will you be able to see 35mm prints of such classics as Pulp Fiction and retro screenings of cult hits like Spiceworld: The Movie and Showgirls, alongside the latest blockbuster hits. With such a throwback vibe, this Brunswick Street locale is the perfect spot to feast on popcorn and an icy beer as you watch Nicolas Cage’s campy performance as Dracula in the vampiric comedy, Renfield.
