The showcase celebrates the creativity and cultural power of First Nations communities through bold designs that unite style, art, and history.
Curated in collaboration with Magpie Goose, the proudly Aboriginal-owned-and-led sustainable fashion label, the exhibition highlights garments that speak of heritage, resilience, and connection. Each design, screen-printed by hand onto natural fibres, carries the unique imprint of the artists and communities behind it.
Led by owners Amanda Hayman (Wakka Wakka and Kalkadoon) and Troy Casey (Kamilaroi), Magpie Goose has partnered with artists from 13 regional and remote communities across Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia. In Brisbane, the exhibition shines a special light on South-East Queensland’s Jinibara and Quandamooka artists, including Sonja Carmichael, whose contemporary weaving blends environmental care with traditional Quandamooka techniques, and Belinda Close, who collaborated with her daughter Mahala Burns to create an intergenerational artwork inspired by the Bungwal fern.
“The garments are more than just fashion statements – they are works of art, fostering respect, understanding, and appreciation for the world’s oldest living culture,” said Museum of Brisbane CEO and Director Zoe Graham. “We invite you to experience the bold and bright designs of Magpie Goose and immerse yourself in the cultural stories generously shared by First Nations artists and communities through their designs”.
Free to the public, Stories You Wear: Magpie Goose is more than an exhibition; it is a celebration of identity, artistry, and the power of self-expression through fabric and form. Find out more about the showcase here.
