Baleen Moondjan: A Story Told at Queen’s Wharf Brisbane

The countdown is on for one of Brisbane Festival’s most anticipated premieres, Baleen Moondjan.

Set to be a highlight of this year’s Festival, the production transforms the Brisbane River into a living stage at The Landing, Queen’s Wharf from 18 to 21 September. It combines awe-inspiring design, rich storytelling and the timeless wisdom of First Nations culture.

Created by acclaimed First Nations storyteller Stephen Page, Baleen Moondjan unfolds against a dramatic backdrop of giant whale bones suspended above the water. Inspired by a story passed down from his grandmother’s tales of the Ngugi, Nunukul and Moondjan people of Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island), Page brings to life the journey of Elder Gindara and her curious granddaughter Nundigili, on the day a baleen whale swims close to shore.

This is Page’s first major commission since leaving Bangarra Dance Theatre, reuniting  him with his longtime creative partner Jacob Nash. Together, they have created a spectacle that is as visually breathtaking as it is emotionally resonant. The production also stars Elaine Crombie as Gindara and Zipporah Corser-Anu as Nundigili, embodying themes of legacy, resilience and belonging.

More than just a performance, Baleen Moondjan is a cultural moment, celebrating First Nations storytelling, the sacred resilience of Country and the enduring bond between humans, animals and the land we call home.

It is a work that promises to linger long after the final bow.
