We would travel further than the entirety of Waterworks Road (does it actually end?), just to indulge in a buttered slice of toast from one of your glorious cafes. The only downsides to Ashgrove are on hills, so we’ve gathered a list of our fave eateries for your consideration.
Local Larder
This boutique wine bar is a local’s dream. Forget taking a trip to the city, your Friday night is right here. Enjoy plates of charcuterie and cheese while you try the best and rarest wines Australia has to offer, as well as a careful selection of locally produced craft beers.
Junk Bar
There’s nothing trashy about this vintage, hole-in-the-wall bar. Sink into your seat, cocktail in hand, while you listen to the smooth tunes of vinyl records – or, settle in for a night of live music with Junk’s regular performances! As well as their range of Asian nibbles, you can BYO food – or even get Uber Eats delivered straight to the door.
Milk
Shake it up at Ashgrove’s resident milk bar. This café has been serving locals its quality eats for years, and yet, never gets old. It’s hard to put into words just how good the deluxe shakes, fresh juices, insta-worthy brekkies, and cheeky chips are – so you’d better just go and try it for yourself. Read more about Milk here!
Taj Bengal
You don’t know curry until you’ve stopped by Taj Bengal. If the smell of perfectly spiced dishes doesn’t get you first, you’re sure to fall in love with the taste of everything from beef madras to spinach pakoras, all made with high quality ingredients. Between us, you’ve gotta get your hands on their gulab jamun – dessert dumplings in sugar syrup.
Banneton
Specialising in traditional wood-fired breads, we don’t know if you’re bready for Banneton’s baked goods. These loaves are on another level, and as well as sandwich-ready slices, you’ll find a whole range of tasty sweets available for immediate consumption. We’re talking chocolate croissants, brownies, and tarts – and you’ll have to grab at yeast one coffee as well.
Famished on Frasers
We’re hungry. No, starving. No, we’re – over this joke already, but truly, Famished on Frasers will satisfy the biggest of tummy rumbles. As well as a scrumptious menu of chipotle pulled pork tortillas, brown rice pudding, and poppy seed French toast, you’ll be pleased to know that your furry friends are more than welcome.
Gerbino’s
Holy cannoli – Gerbino’s really knows what it’s doing when it comes to sweet treats. With cabinets full of everything from traditional Easter dove cakes to panettone, and their famous Sicilian cannoli, you won’t regret stopping by.
Cakes by Judy C
Take a slice of the good life at Ashgrove’s resident cake maker, Cakes by Judy C. These cakes are just as beautiful as they are delectable, and we’re kind obsessed. Take your event to the next level with a custom-made creation, or take a peek through their catalogue of baked goods to get some serious sugar cravings.
Macho Macho
Every man may want to be a macho macho man, but we’re just interested in Macho Macho’s food. This cosy eatery and bar is great for catching up with your mates over a wine, while you feast on ricotta gnocchi and other delicious bites.
See you on the other side (of the hills).
