With city slicker dining in the comfort of suburbia, Nundah’s newest neighbour Blockhouse Eat and Drink is catching the eyes (and Instagram photos) of locals and broader Brisbane foodies alike.
A new venue from Jerome Dalton, better known for his gold class catering company, Dalton Hospitality, and Angel and Oliver Market, who own Workshop Café in Redcliffe, the café and champagne bar is a whole new concept for Brisbane. Café by day, sophisticated wine and champagne bar by night, the charming new spot has something for everyone, whether you’re an early bird or a night owl.
Start the day with their stellar breakfast menu, which is good enough to entice even the fussiest of Ascot mums away from Racecourse Road. The largely savoury menu features hipster breakfast staples like almond milk chia seed pudding with honeycomb and soaked oats with house made yoghurt, as well as a twist on the tradition in the form of banana bread with muscovado sugar and coffee butter. There’s no shortage on bread in this aptly named ‘Toast and Oats’ menu though, with the likes of baguette with green peas and ham hock, and sourdough with tender 18 hour beef cheek and chimichurri just to name a few. Vegetarians are also catered for, with a three egg omelette and dark rye with Portobello muschrooms and crème fraiche amongst the many choices available.
For the sake of Brisbane foodie tradition, we were obliged to try their version of the crowd pleasing avocado on toast, and can safely say that sprouted bread with avocado, tomato salsa, mint, fetta and the addition of some hot smoked salmon will make you reconsider your next CBD brunch date in favour of a trek to the ‘burbs. The breakfast menu is available until a very civilised 2:30pm, giving your food baby just enough time to settle before coming back for their equally-as-enticing dinner menu from 6pm.
In keeping with the whole neighbourhood feel, the main dinner menu involves sharing proteins like duck and le puy green lentil pie, flaked salmon with grains and Portugese style sardines – however, we think it may be the blackened beef brisket with corn salsa to share for two to four people that may just win over the local carnivores.
For the true Blockhouse experience, grab a seat at the bar and munch on some share plates, although you may have difficulty choosing between the duck crackling with mandarin marmalade, fried whipped potato, goat cheese stuffed jalapenos and cognac glazed pork sausage by the metre. Yep, that’s right – by the metre. Finish the experience off with dessert (just an Eton mess with vodka and macadamia no less!), or a champagne from their 25 strong list, and leave ready to make this gem your new local.
Blockhouse Eat/Drink can be found at 130 Ryans Road, Nundah and is open all week from 7:30am until late.
