A Greek inspired restaurant and bar on Hercules Street? It was meant to be.
If you like saying ‘Opa’ to meaty Greek feasts, scrumptious mezze plates and exotic cocktails, you’re going to love Hamilton’s fresh new addition. Atalanta Bar and Greek is a smorgasbord for all the senses, from the aroma of charcoal roasted meats coming from the open kitchen to the sight of the chic, airy venue with gold beams crisscrossing the industrial ceiling. And with a menu full of delicious contemporary Greek fare with a twist on offer, including breakfast on the weekends, you’ll be as ensnared by the new foodie spot as if Medusa had you in her sights.
Whether you dine early or late, you’ll want to take a Hercules sized appetite with you, because Atalanta is all about feasting. Pick a few share plates from the mezze menu and eat your way through plates of slow cooked goat croquettes, spanakopita, crab moussaka and Greek meatballs, but don’t go too overboard – you want to save room for the main event.
Divided into ‘The Gathered’ and ‘The Hunted,’ the full menu is all about pairing tender slow cooked meats with flavoursome sides. Think charcoaled chicken skewers paired with smoked potato puree or roasted pork belly with a side of smashed chickpeas that will have you saying ‘Oh my Zeus!’ Can’t decide? Just let the chef pick, with five or seven courses of Greek deliciousness brought out for the whole table.
Lunch can be equally as hearty, or you can opt for something a little more hands on with one of the scrumptious gyros. Sticky pork, grilled haloumi or slow cooked lamb is all wrapped up with salad and sauce in a warm pita bread. Bonus, it means you’ll still have plenty of room to hit up the dessert menu, and with sweet halva topped by ice cream and cotton candy, and baklava in flavours like white chocolate and salted caramel, you’ll really want to leave room for dessert.
Of course, it will all go down even better with one of the creative cocktails available. Inspired by the goddess Atalanta herself, there is certainly nothing traditional here, instead you’ll find crafty creations like the watermelon and basil margarita, and the Alexander the Greek, with brandy, port, evaporated milk, ouzo, sugar and nutmeg. There’s even ouzo to sample on the menu – so you might want to make sure you catch an Uber.
With a breezy outdoor courtyard perfect for Sunday brunching or chilled Saturday night drinks and nibbles, Atalanta Bar and Greek may just be Hamilton’s newest weekend favourite. You’ll find them at 47 Hercules Street, open 7 days for lunch and dinner and breakfast on weekends.
