While you settle in for your own multi-course menu, the dog beside you will be doing much the same, with their own chair, courses arriving one by one and even a round of Puptails to wash it all down. This is proper table service, just with considerably more wagging under the table.
The Canine Degustation takes over Crystalbrook Vincent at Howard Smith Wharves on Thursday 24 September, bringing The Puptail Society and Nicole & Baby’s luxury dog dining concept to Brisbane after a sold-out Sydney debut.
Billed as an Australian first, it’s a proper sit-down degustation designed for dogs and their humans, with separate menus for both. Small dogs can share their human’s chair, while larger guests get a seat of their own. Frankly, watching a Chihuahua or cavoodle wait patiently for table service may be worth the ticket price alone.
Puptail Society founder Katie Selby told the Courier-Mail that Australia’s appetite for dog-friendly dining accelerated during lockdown, when people became accustomed to having their pets around all the time. Once life reopened, plenty of owners weren’t particularly interested in leaving them at home again.
Brisbane venues have certainly caught on. But there’s a fairly substantial leap between allowing a dog under the table and serving them a multi-course dinner.
So, what does a canine degustation actually involve?
Dinner for you opens with beetroot macaron, whipped feta and honey before seared Queensland scallops arrive with pickled fennel, lemon butter and a prosciutto and pine nut crumb. The main is a 250g grain-fed sirloin with roasted kipfler potatoes, crispy carrot and blackberry butter sauce.
Dessert is a wattle and white chocolate crème brûlée tart with smoked orange and almond tuile, and there’s a welcome cocktail on arrival to kick things off.
Your dog, meanwhile, won’t be sitting beside you waiting hopefully for a piece of steak to hit the floor.
Their menu begins with egg terrine and crispy salmon skin, followed by a Pip Eats patty with a Bones & Whiskers biscuit and lactose-free Sherpa Treats cheese puffs. PawPure takes care of dessert with a dedicated dessert board.
There are even drink pairings. The Puptail Society’s aptly named Puptails are bone broth blends served throughout the evening as the canine answer to a mocktail.
It is objectively ridiculous and decadent. It is also very cute.
The Doggy Details
Tickets start at just under $300, covering the dining experience for both human and dog. Small-dog tickets have your pup sharing your chair, while large-dog tickets include a seat of their own. Solo human tickets are also available if your doggy date happens to have an extra human in tow.
Guests receive a $40 Nicole & Baby voucher and a Puptails tote with a few extras inside, and there’ll be lucky door prizes drawn on the night. Better still, $10 from every ticket will be donated to Pug Patrol.
The dinner is held outdoors under cover, so a little Brisbane rain shouldn’t derail proceedings. If the weather turns properly unpleasant, the event will be moved to another date.
Numbers are capped and, given the Sydney event sold out, we wouldn’t leave this one too late.
