Renowned Sydney-based artist Steve Lopes is set to unveil a deeply introspective body of work in his latest exhibition, Everyone’s Amazing, opening at Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, from 21 October to 15 November 2025.
Known for his bold figurative landscapes, Lopes has spent more than 25 years capturing the essence of human existence through vivid brushwork and layered storytelling. His new collection continues this exploration, blending expressive colour and complex composition to reflect on the beauty and fragility of life.
At the heart of Everyone’s Amazing are imagined figures placed within real-world environments. While the landscapes are inspired by scenes observed, the figures themselves are drawn from the artist’s imagination, creating dreamlike narratives that speak to isolation, displacement and belonging.
“These works deal with our defiance of fate and our essential vulnerabilities,” says Lopes. “In the increasingly shattered world we find ourselves in, this is an intangible attempt to capture visually the very fleetingness of our being”.
An avid traveller, Lopes draws inspiration from the places he visits and the people he encounters. His artistic practice is one of constant evolution, driven by a desire for self-challenge and creative authenticity. “I’ve learnt painting is hard, to never give up, to compete with myself,” he reflects.
The Artist Talk and Opening Event will be held on Saturday, 1 November from 2 pm, offering visitors a chance to hear firsthand about the inspiration and process behind the exhibition.
Entry is free, and art lovers can visit Mitchell Fine Art, 86 Arthur Street, Fortitude Valley, Monday to Saturday, or explore the collection online here.
