Brisbane's High Tea Revival: Passion Tree Velvet

Silver cake stands, fresh cream dolloped onto still-warm scones, dainty tea cups and slender sandwiches… a decadent high tea can make us feel like we’ve died and gone to heaven. Which we desperately hope is true when we look at the bill – ghosts don’t need to pay up do they? Passion Tree Velvet is our knight in shining gold-leaf armour. Recently opened in Carindale, the venue has come to rescue the sweet-tooths of Brisbane from a plight of good-but-expensive or affordable-but-meh high teas. Part English tea house, part Parisian patisserie, part Belgian chocolatier and all amazing, your new go-to for indulgences is revolutionizing the high tea scene while keeping it super affordable. At Passion Tree Velvet high tea is the name of the game, not just an added extra. Four different high teas are available, from a classic Devonshire for when need to dash to the premium Full Duchess High Tea. There’s also the adorable Teddy Bears Picnic for little ones – time to kidnap your nephew. The vast selection of macarons, scones, sandwiches and patiserie treats are made fresh each day by an expert Belgian chocolatier who trained in France, worked across the globe and is now in Carindale ready to rock your socks. All your dine-in experiences are accompanied by a full suite of Harney and Son’s teas – the same Fair Trade, hard-to-find brew sipped in London’s Dorchester Hotel and the Ritz. Pinkies up, of course. If you’re not planning on sticking around for long, you can also sink your teeth into an array of snack-sized treats from authentic éclairs oozing with patissiere’s cream to brownies with real gold leaf, or box up an entire tower of macarons for your next shin dig. Passiontree Velvet is open 7 days in Westfield Carindale, as well as Robina town centre and Coolangatta.
