7 Must Try Brisbane Desserts

Oh Brisbane, you’ve got a sweet tooth and you’re not afraid to let your sweet flag fly. From cronuts to caramel popcorn, there’s something about our city’s dessert scene that’s always got us chasing the latest and greatest (err donut fries anyone?).

Well friends, search no more, because we’ve tracked down seven seriously delish desserts that should top your must-try list. We might have to buy new jeans but, hey, it’s all for you – you’re welcome!

SMOKING DESSERT | DEER DUCK BISTRO | AUCHENFLOWER

While the weather’s not smoking hot, we’re sauntering down to Deer Duck Bistro to get around a dessert that’s as smoking to look at, as it is to eat. Now, we’re not all about blowing smoke up their arsenal of desserts, but this rich chocolate torte with toasted meringue is as cool as the coulis it’s served up with, and served in one hell of a whimsical way, with smoked vanilla semifreddo on a bed of macadamia sable. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, baby!

LA PASSIONÈ  | WOODEN HORSE | CLAYFIELD

New comer to the Brisbane dining game, Wooden Horse, has us swooning with the addition of their La Passionè dessert. With flavours like dark AND white chocolate (because one is never enough), passionfruit, sour cherry and salty pistachio – this post meal delight is not one to be sour for.

BLACK GARLIC BREAD | GAUGE | SOUTH BRISBANE

In our opinion, the only thing better than sliced bread is sliced garlic bread – and Gauge is bringing the goods. Make no mistake though, this ain’t no crusty Dominos loaf (as delicious as they are). Forever unpredictable, Gauge’s black garlic bread is simultaneously sweet and savoury, and as delicious as it is surprising. Bonus points for giving us lashings of burnt vanilla and brown butter.

GELATO DEGUSTATION | GELATO MESSINA | SOUTH BRISBANE

Regular degustations are so pedestrian. Any pleb can work their way through a seven course meal (with our eyes shut and our hands behind our back, ya’ll), but it takes a real hero to work their way through a dessert degustation and survive the impending sugar crash. The gelato dego from Messina is as heavenly as it is exclusive, and you’ll leave with more than just a Neapolitan complex.

LEMONGRASS SEMIFREDDO | LONGTIME | FORTITUDE VALLEY

Brisbane’s cult restaurant is proving itself to be more than just a haven for spice lovers, it’s also becoming a favourite amongst diners on the hunt for a sweet little something-something. Known for their kick-ass flavour combos and innovative pairings, their desserts are no exception. So next time you reach for the four month old vanilla ice cream in the back of the freezer, karate slap it out of your hand and head straight to Ann Street for a taste of Longtime’s lemongrass and ginger semifreddo.

ROCKY ROAD | COWCH DESSERT COCKTAIL BAR | SOUTH BANK

If you prefer your dessert in liquid form (or anything for that matter), take a step back from your regular post-main delight and hit Cowch for a taste of their dessert cocktail menu (desserts and cocktails, can we get a hallelujah?). Our weapon of choice? The Rocky Road, mixed with chocolate and vanilla liquor, Frangelico, whipped cream, chocolate flakes, marshmallow, peanuts and even a cherry on top. And since it’s a cocktail, we won’t judge you if you have more than one (lols jokes, when would we ever judge you for seconds?). It would almost be rude not to.

LOADED DONUT FRIES | THE DOUGHNUT BAR | HAMILTON

The Doughnut Bar knew what we wanted before we did and have come up with the goods. With a base of donut fries, these bad boys are covered in smashed Oreos, toasted marshmallows and slavered in milk chocolate. We’re getting diabetes just thinking about it.

So whether you’re feeling like a quick sugar hit or something more decadent, there’s something for every sweet hankering you’ve drooled yourself into. We, however, take no responsibility when your pants don’t fit again come summer (worth it).
