Having brunch at crowded coffee spots with every man and his French bulldog gets old quick. Long queues, elbow shoves and shouted conversations isn’t our idea of a relaxing weekend date, so we’ve rounded up a few hidden gems around Brisbane that we promise will be soon become your favourites – as long as you don’t tell every Tom, Dick and Harry about them.
Sure, there’s some secrets that should stay hidden (sorry Mum, don’t know who broke your china vase) but it would be really mean and absolutely inhumane for us to keep all these delicious spots to ourselves. Sharing is caring after all – just not when it comes to the actual consumption of food.
The Precinct at St Leger | Ascot
Tucked away under the St Leger stand at Eagle Farm Racecourse, you’ll discover a ridiculously cosy café with plenty of old school charm: think recycled timber, Instagram-worthy greenery and couches you’ll want to retire in. There’s both healthy and hearty meals galore, with breakfasts like rich baked eggs or the wholesome kale and sweet potato Mindful Plate, and lunches of paleo lasagne or weekly burger specials. Whether you’re feeling naughty or nice, there’s something for everyone so hungry they could eat a horse.
The Smug Fig | East Brisbane
Smug is exactly how you’ll be feeling when you discover this little gem on Stanley Street East. Nestled amongst a nursery and an antique store, The Smug Fig is the perfect spot for a serene brekky, whether you go for healthy goodness or decadent naughtiness. With delicious acai bowls and a double smoked ham omelette with house made relish and brie cheese, a super convenient takeaway window is also offered for those pyjama days.
Julia’s Pantry | Kenmore
Feeling a bit homesick for mum’s kitchen? Julia’s Pantry has got you covered, with mouth-watering treats just like your mum makes. Everything is made from scratch, from the cute cakes and slices to take home (not that they’ll make it that far), to jams, jellies and sauces to stock up your own pantry with. Stay a while and nibble on open sandwiches like roasted pear, blue cheese and honey while you sip gourmet teas and generally just make yourself at home in Julia’s Pantry!
The Blue Poppy | Morningisde
So hidden even most Morningside residents don’t know about it, The Blue Poppy is tucked down a side street with only an a-frame pointing the way to their cosy café. If you somehow manage to find the place, you’ll be rewarded with French toast, eggs benny and breakfast burgers galore, not to mention irresistible sweet treats and smooth coffee.
We’re predicting the baristas will know your name and order by the end of next week.
