Figgin’ delicious brunches at The Smug Fig

If you like your surroundings to be as lush as your breakfast on a Sunday morning, then the newest café to hit Stanley Street East is sure to have you a little excited. Located amongst a nursery and antique store, The Smug Fig is serving up light but delicious breakfast fare against the background of some rather serene greenery. The menu is well balanced with a mixture of healthy freshness and sheer decadence. Clean-eaters will enjoy the bircher muesli with fig, apple, walnuts and Greek yoghurt, or perhaps the acai bowl with toasted muesli, coconut shavings and seasonal fruit. With icy cold acai that’s the consistency of soft serve, this is one bowl sure to draw a crowd during the warmer months! Any sweet tooths will be delighted by the banana bread with caramalised pear and mascarpone, while those well experienced in breakfast dining will be drawn to the Smug Benny with double smoked ham and asparagus on Turkish. For something even more decadent, the double smoked ham omelette not only comes with house made tomato relish but is made with brie cheese. Oh brie mine! smug fig 2For those seeking a post-morning-gym-session feast (or maybe just a hangover recovery) the Fig Brekkie has you covered, with eggs, bacon, chorizo, balsamic tomato and potato hash on sourdough. But proving that you can’t beat a time-tested favourite, our pick is the smashed avocado with feta, dukka, lemon and balsamic glaze on sourdough. With mountains of smash that’s as green as the pot plants around you, this deceptively simple dish will leave you smug with delight, particularly with the possibility of added extras like garlic thyme mushrooms, haloumi, eggs or ham. If you don’t have the time to sit down, or would rather stay in the car in your pyjamas, then don’t fret – their takeaway window is the perfect opportunity to grab a silky smooth coffee and one of their tempting $9 takeaway wraps or avo on toast. For food that will leave you smugly satisfied and keen as a bean to try the entire menu, then The Smug Fig is one to add to your breakfast repertoire. Breakfast is served from 7am-12pm during the week and 7am–2pm on weekends. Words by Kat Gridley
